What you'll do

York has been a hub of transportation since the Romans established the city in AD71, linking it to an efficient road system and making use of its waterways.

However, the city is also famed for its rich railway heritage and is home to the largest railway museum in the world.
This tour provides a unique insight into how and why York became an important centre for the railway industry, and the four men named George (George Hudson, George Townsend Andrews, George Stephenson and George Leeman) who were instrumental in shaping the city’s railway heritage.

As well as uncovering layers of history, there’s an opportunity to learn about the buildings connected to the industry, from the original railway station which was built in 1840, through to an extended tour option which takes in the National Railway Museum.

It is an absolute must for anyone interested in the subject, but has also been designed for those with little knowledge of the railway.

About the organization: Invisible Cities

Invisible Cities is a global social enterprise that trains people who have been affected by homelessness to become walking tour guides of their own city. We offer alternative tours of the places we are in, to locals and tourists, raising awareness about homelessness and providing new opportunities to our guides. All profits from the tours are used to support them further in their development.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Invisible Cities.

Where you'll be

Starting at Library Square, the tour will take you all the way to York Railway Station (Obviously the most important part of the tour!) Gemma will also take you in the original railway station at West Offices from the vantage point of York Walls. This tour is a so special as it reflects Gemma's passion for train and the old history of the Railway heritage. She has spent many months focusing on finding only relevant and surprising information.

York was a lovely place to experience, we’d definitely go back again. Maybe just double check with organisers before booking to check they are able to fulfil the expectation and description of the experience, as advertised. Due to C-19 impact, we weren’t able to go into the museum unfortunately. Without the museum aspect, I do feel it was slightly overpriced for what we received. But all in all it was surprisingly interesting and the hosts local knowledge was excellent. Thanks :)

Zakia was a fab tour guide for me and my partner. We learnt loads about the original railway into York City centre and saw some hidden sites that we would have probably missed! Zakia also had great knowledge and has a lot of passion for the topic and the local area! Would recommend!
