What you'll do

Guests will join John Clayton for a Plein Air oil painting experience! John will give a short talk about the Art colony of Provincetown and a demonstration of how the painting develops. We will meet at the Provincetown Inn and Breakwater. I will provide the materials including palette knife, oils, canvas pads, boards to paint on and easels. My work is about the light key, and expressing it through paint. While attending the The National Academy in New York, I was the recipient of the Arthur and Melville Philips Scholarship and the Mrs Roberts Forbes Scholarship. I also received an honorable mention in the Academy's annual student show. I also was one of eight in the Provincetown Art Association's "Emerging Artists Exhibition", in 1999. My 25 years of experience in the "Plein Air" craftsmanship of painting makes me uniquely qualified to teach guests the art of outpointing and color visualization. I worked with several art organizations around the Cape and country including PAAM and the Key West Art Center.

Where you'll be

We will meet at the Provincetown Inn and Breakwater. We will stay in that location for our experience. Easels and materials will be set up for the guests. I will be giving a introduction of my painting experience and style along with painting history as far back as the 1800's. Through my own painting, I will be creating an outline of the scenic area my guests can easily follow! Each guest will leave with their own one of a kind painting!

This was fun and a nice relaxing morning. Don’t be precious about exact duplication... we all have artists in us. John could not have been nicer.

It was an enjoyable, instructive experience. John was very enabling, patient and understanding. Because of John and his instruction I will continue to paint on my own. Thanks John.

John is a very knowledgeable painting teacher with a fun, relaxed disposition. He teaches the basics and then guides you to do your own thing. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I had not oil painted in many years and saw this experience as a jumpstart back into painting. John throughly and clearly explains concepts and uses visual tools that helped me see where I could improve. His directions made sense to me and I left with a some important pointers that in can incorporate into future paintings. A fabulous experience and the location, at the very tip of the Cape is gorgeous. I highly recommend John, for beginners and experienced.

This was my first Plein Aire painting experience, and John gave very good, personalized instruction. He is also a lot of fun!
