I didn't get to meet John but rather his colleagues Mert and Selçuk. They were very friendly and both are very passionate about history. They told me amazing stories and anecdotes about the Ottoman Empire all along the cruise. I was alone, which could have gone very wrong in terms of atmosphere, but they made sure that I enjoyed my time and I appreciated that. Mert is now a friend that I'm still in touch with as he sent me a couple of texts after the cruise to ask if I needed any help for my stay in Istanbul.
The only negative is that the food was quite basic. Other than that, I think it was a cool experience!

Disclosure: I was by myself. I believe this trip was coordinated between John and another company that gives the Bosphorus tours. To be absolutely fair, John called me earlier in the day to explain about the activity, he tried to warn me about being by myself and he even offered a refund if I didn't feel like doing it. I still decided to go. They picked me up at the hotel on time. There are hundreds of tourists taking these night boat tours but despite the apparent mayhems, I think the organization was remarkably good. I didn't get lost!
The boat was nice. I was assigned a table and sat in one side next to a couple that seemed to be on their honey moon and in the other side, to a cheerful Pakistani family (parents and three children ranging 5 to 10 years-old). They definitely made my night much better.
The food was good.
The servers were eager to fill your drinking wishes. I didn't have to wait at all to get offered another drink.
I was sited farthest from the dancing acts so I had to watch the TV. Maybe I would have had a better time if at least closer to the dancing and acts.
The ambience around me was cheerful.
Getting out of the boat seemed confusing initially but I just followed the people and my bus driver was right there fishing everybody in our group.
I am not giving 5 stars only because I got a bit bored at the end. I guess I would not recommend this tour for single women travelers like myself unless there is an special table for people going alone. One cannot enjoy the all-you-can-drink completely (as it is not safe) and everybody essentially goes accompanied so it is not easy to enter other groups.
I people that went on a small groups seemed to have had a blast!

Do it! We actually booked for a Saturday but were unable to join due to overbooking but, we talked to John over the phone and he rescheduled for the next night and even gave us highly recommended areas, sites and some bars to go see instead. Host was great, communicative and explain things. We did not take the shuttle bus from a hotel and just used Bitaski to order a cab to and back for less than $3.00 USD. Dinner’s traditional Turkish appetizers were great! Unlimited local drinks and soft drinks all night. And the all night entertainment was on point. Well worth 3 hours and night of sightseeing of Istanbul.
