What you'll do

The audience can just come to my home and help cook the food.

We will go over each of the ingredients. We will make a special type of rice called Nasi Kuning (yellow rice), unique to Indonesia. For dessert we will make a delicious Indonesian style crepe with pandan leaf, freshly grated coconut and palm sugar.

From crushing the peppers to plating the food, the audience members can be as active as they like.

When the food is finished we will eat together and discuss how it tastes. I am always looking to improve and to modify my food if necessary, based on audience feedback.

I am Indonesian, from Makassar, Sulawesi. My grandmother taught me how to cook when I was a little girl. Makassar food tends to be spicy but I can customize it for each audience.

Where you'll be

We will stay at my home. I have a modern style kitchen but some things will be old fashioned, such as using stone implement to crush the chili peppers, etc.

We had a good time with Shelley and her husband but felt that the structure of the cooking class could be improved. Many times we were awkwardly just standing there waiting for the machines to do its job. We think the class could have been more engaging if the food was made from scratch like most cooking classes. Also Shelley’s husband was watching videos on his phone with his foot on the table a 2m away from us in the same room. For the price, it was abit pricey. There are many amazing Indonesian cooking classes in Bali where you can learn 6-8 dishes for cheaper. We have attended many cooking classes and genuinely enjoy them so when we signed up for this in a home, we thought it would have been something slightly different from the usual Indonesian food. The cooking class also seemed like they were trying to promote their home stay. We had a tour of the rooms and the property. Still, Shelley and her husband were welcoming.

Compared to other cooking classes I’ve been to this felt a bit like we just watched the host cook. The hosts was nice, but I just feel like making noodles with a machine, watching it buzz for 10 minutes, then just putting some sauce isn’t really what I was expecting. I have been to a few other classes where you pay the same or less, and would make 4-6 dishes, all from scratch, and that was much more inclusive.

A lovely experience where Shelly and Neil invited us into their lovely home. It was a lovely intimate class where Shelly let us get as involved as we wanted. We cooked a delicious wonton mein from scratch and all ate together and chatted. Then we made a delicious desert that we got to take home with us. Lovely people and a very welcoming environment - thanks for all the local recommendations!

Thank you Shelley and Neil for having us in your home! We loved the fact that it was private and home-y environment. We would love to come back to cook chicken satay; we'll let you know how our try in cooking your dish went :)

If you love to cook or to eat noodles and wontons, look no further. Shelly and Neil are wonderful hosts and we got to learn the basics of noodle making and more. Never thought my daughter would fancy making her own wontons.but now she's even determined to make them at home! The food tastes delicious and not too difficult to replicate at home. I love our mother daughter time today. Thank you so much for opening your home kitchen to us and for the lovely chats.

Our family of 5 had a lovely time with Shelley. We made wontons and homemade noodles and an Indonesian dessert. Afterward we were invited to have a dip in the beautiful pool before we walked down to the beach to finish off our day. Shelley is a great host and speaks English very well.
