What you'll do

You will be greeted at Slip 2 in Battery Park, The Battery (next to the Statue of Liberty Ferry).

The band will be tuning up and doodling as you check in for a jazz cruise around NYC. The hustle, bustle and noise of the city turns to the sweet, cool rhythms of bebop, smoky blues, ballads and other jazz standards as you sail smoothly out into the summer night against the backdrop of NYC skyline.

Acclaimed jazz guitarist, Joe Cohn, and accomplished saxophonist Ian Hendrickson-Smith, leads this swinging quintet; Joe & Ian will be joined by a variety of other well-known guest musicians booked by Jazz Standard founder, James Polsky.

The band begins playing & you are welcomed aboard the CLIPPER CITY TALL SHIP, given a short safety speech and orientation where questions will be answered; we will then motor off the dock and get underway. We raise sails once we have cleared the sea wall and sail around the harbor for just under 2 hours. You will be able to walk around the vessel and are invited to engage my knowledgeable crew with any questions you might have as we sail past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governors Island, in view of bridges and other landmarks of NY Harbor. With the wind in your hair, Seagulls, buoys, & foghorns; passing ships and tugboats will add to the serene and exciting respite from your busy NYC day and you will debark with a blissful calm feeling.
Other things to note
Sailing is an outdoor experience. Dress for the weather. Sunscreen, hat, etc. Please confirm trip w. AirBnB 24 hrs prior. Arrive 15 mins early. Duration approx. 1:45 mins.

Your host will be me. I hold a 100-ton USCG Masters License with a sailing endorsement. I began my sailing career volunteering on an historic sailboat here in NY Harbor 30 years ago under the majestic gaze of the Statue of Liberty and the NY Skyline. I have been hosting jazz on sailboats since 2004. Born and raised in NYC's East Village, I grew up in a musical family; with jazz greats, such as Dizzy Gillespie, and Al Cohn as family friends, it is only natural that I combined my love of sailing large vintage schooners with my appreciation for world-class jazz.

I and my crew take pride in offering an epic & laid back experience here in NY harbor; taking locals and visitors out to enjoy the quintessential sights (& sounds) for the past 19 years. Come on down to the Battery and enjoy some of NYC's sailing past & musical present.

Where you'll be

We will set sail before the sun sets and sail past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governors Island, the Colgate Clock, see unparalleled view of the bridges of NYC & her skyline from the deck of a pre-Civil War Era replica Clipper Ship.

We will go on a musical journey, sampling from ballads, bebop, swing and some deep blues; no matter where we go, it will always be straight-ahead Jazz that goes deep.

It's an epic and sensory experience!!

It honestly just wasn't worth how much money and energy was spent. When I originally booked the experience, it was a surprise for my fiance's birthday and it got messed up because airbnb put the wrong address/location on the listing. I call the host and he gets everything smoothed out which is great and all but when I finally get there, I was extremely underwhelmed. The boat didn't look like the picture. The live band wasn't ACTUALLY playing, the real music was coming through a speaker on the floor and they were lip syncing. (I don't know if they thought people wouldn't notice?) The ride was nice and the veiws were really nice but because of the mix up we didn't get to see it during the actual sunset (I booked it for 5:30pm and we couldn't get on until the next one which was 8:30pm) it just wasn't worth how much I paid. We ended up having to walk around for an hour and a half......I mean I found and booked a cruise with a live DJ, a full bar and a kitchen for less then half of what I paid for this and the views of nyc were just as amazing.
