What you'll do
We will cruise comfortably through the jungle, over new lava fields to Pohoiki's black sand beach, created just-over one year ago by the most recent volcanic eruption. Old Hawaii still exists on the famous Red Road. Feel as though you have stepped back in time as you travel leisurely along a coastline surrounded by lush tropical jungle. An electric bike ride provides the idyllic way to experience the raw and powerful energy of the Big Island. Ride along a winding street bursting with color and spotted with shade from tunnels of Mango, Hala, and Monkey Pod trees. Enjoy the most beautiful coastal views. Feel what it’s like to live and breath nature. Before busy cities and fast paced lives, the red road existed. Take in the smells of the jungle, ocean, and history. Your guide will share from her experience of moving and falling in love with the island, being evacuated, and returning to the changes that took place. You will also learn facts about the local plants and lava along the way. We will ride as far as Pohoiki to see the massive results of the latest volcanic eruption; which blocked the boat ramp from connecting to the ocean, as it pushed in new black sand. Enjoy local suggestions and access to rarely discovered coastal trails and tide-pools all along the Red Road. Taste locally grown fruit or fresh juice along the cliffside as we try to spot sea turtles in the waves.
Theresa And Justin
Cruise along the Kalapana Kapoho coastline with Theresa, an electric bike enthusiast and a local on the historic Red Road. She is passionate about learning the local culture, history, plants, and language. Since moving to the Island, Theresa has participated in a Hawaiian language and culture group led by a renowned community elder with a PhD in language. Here, Theresa learns the local history of the people and lava flows as well as the basics of the Hawaiian language. Through neighborhood hula classes, Theresa fell in love the fascinating mythology of this distinct location. Through lei making classes, she learns about neighborhood folklore, plants in the area, and customs of gratitude for the land. Let Theresa share her unique collection of knowledge about the area as you glide through a rainforest jungle under a canopy of trees.

Where you'll be
Our ride will lead to the fissure 8 eruption flow, where lava covered the Red Road. We’ll ride through my neighborhood to the new road, across the latest lava fields, to the new black sand beach at Pohoiki. In our small group, you'll set the pace. We will ride gentle rolling hills effortlessly through the jungle, enjoying coastal views along our way to see the effects of the last volcanic eruption. After the ride, we will eat a tropical snack.
