What you'll do

Meeting by the lakes edge outside the historic Conjola Post Office & Shop, the route for this guided eco-walk includes lakeside, bush and beach. You'll hear stories of natural environment, flora and fauna (and some surprising local history!) as we wander along the lake edge with binoculars handy for a closer look at the abundant birdlife. Kangaroo sightings are guaranteed on this walk, and lakeside is where we're most likely to see them.

Next, via a boardwalk through the bush, you'll visit 3 fabulously placed look-outs with stunning vistas of lake and coast, before emerging on beautiful Conjola beach.
Walks along the sea shore vary seasonally. You might see whales, dolphins, endangered beach-nesting birds (and surfers catching a break off Green Island). Leaving the beach via a walk over sand dunes - looking out for wildlife tracks & seasonal plants - we follow the lake edge back to finish near Conjola Entrance boat ramp, with views over to Conjola National Park.

Bushfire Update Feb 2020
Conjola District was badly affected by recent bushfires, and we'll share some stories of this challenging time with you on the tour. Luckily the tour route wasn't burnt so no changes there, but a heads up the national park views are no longer lush and green.

Your visit will have a positive impact on our bushfire affected community - thank you.

I’m co-founder of Kotahi Tourism and live in a small village called Fishermans Paradise, at the head of Lake Conjola. I've developed and guided (award winning!) tours in both Australia and New Zealand, and love sharing our unique local environment with visitors. I'm generally joined on these walks by my husband Hohepa. We're both from NZ and met when we were working at Te Papa Tongarewa - the Museum of NZ. We've lived in Australia since 2001, initially in Sydney where I managed The Rocks Discovery Museum and Sydney Learning Adventures, before we made a 'tree & sea' change to the beautiful NSW South Coast & started Kotahi Tourism in 2013.

Where you'll be

You get '2-for-1' guides on this walk! I'm joined by my husband Hohepa, co-Founder of Kotahi Tourism, who adds his own stories to the experience from a Māori perspective.

Please note: We respectfully do not interpret Aboriginal Cultural heritage on this guided walk at Lake Conjola - but we'll recommend some great local Aboriginal tours and experiences if you're interested!

A really wonderful insight into the local ecosystem with a sidebar on the indigenous culture of the region. A well thought out tour with two warm and friendly guides with many years of experience in the tourism industry and who bring real passion to their tour. Highly recommended for any visitor who wants a deeper understanding of this special coastline at a fantastic price.

I had a great time with Melinda and Joe. I was privileged to have both of them on my own - and they are both passionate and knowledgeable about the area and it’s cultural and natural environment. I highly recommend them and hope to bring my family here sometime to visit. Scenery is varied and breathtaking views , lakeside, bush and seashore makes it well worth doing.

Do yourself a favour and do this eco tour. The knowledge and story telling was brilliant. Their connection and passion for the land and wildlife was very evident. It was awesome, both my husband and I enjoyed it so much we did both tours.

Thank you Melinda and Joe for taking us through some beautiful areas near Lake Conjola. Your care for the local environment was lovely to see and we wouldn't have been able to find these areas without your help.

Great experience for those who love to know deeper about Lake Conjola’s eco environment, plants n animals n aboriginal’s wisdom in using the plants. We saw kangaroos n different types of birds. Heard about the grey nurse shark that appear in the lake. Amazed that a 50 year old lady lives across the small island opposite the lake shore, good courage to live real close to nature. She must be healthy n fit having fresh air n greens around her. Melinda n Joe made effort to bring pictures of the grey nurse shark n other creatures to make up for lack of opportunities to see the real shark etc. Thank you! Also great recommendations for flat head fish n chips at the small cafe where we start n end the tour! So far that was the best fish n chips in the entire trip👍
