What you'll do
Guests will arrive at the farm and be greeted by Peter and Michelle. We then embark on a 1.5 hour farm tour that includes introductions to Forest Farming and Permaculture Design. The tour begins in the shiitake mushroom yard, then onto the chicken and duck condo, greenhouse, plant nursery, gardens, honeybees, orchards and into the edge of a classic Appalachian cove hardwood forest. Next, we tour the 1800's hand hewed log cabin and have an opportunity to browse our farm store for produce, plants, books, seeds and herbal products before you head down the road.
Other things to note:
We are a mountain farm, our driveway is steep and a bit bumpy in spots however we have never had a guest that couldn't make it it up. The farm tour is a moderately challenging hike with many breaks.

Peter is a lifelong student, teacher and advocate of organic farming and sustainable culture. He spent his twenties in the company of master seed growers and Permaculture designers in New Mexico and the garden island-Kauai, Hawaii. In 2000 he moved to the Ashevile area, co-founded the pioneering green building firm Southeast Ecological Design and received his Permaculture Teachers certificate. Beginning in 2008 he established Asheville’s celebrated organic seed company, Sow True Seed. Uniting his powers of botanical inspiration with the embodiment of the divine feminine, Peter merged with Michelle in 2016 to birth their life’s greatest work, Watershed Forest Farm.

Watershed Forest Farm is located in a wide open sunny holler, deep in Madison County, North Carolina. The traditional 1880s homestead is surrounded by a vast Appalachian hardwood forest that rises 1200 feet to an encircling ridge with breathtaking views. Peter and Michelle were great hosts and offered a great experience. We learned about their eco farm business and felt like we were interacting with experts and pioneers in the forestry/farming industry. Some highlights were learning about shitake mushroom farming, the chicken business, and permaculture. They also had a cute chicken who thought it was a duck and P&M were very accepting of her identity crisis. I look forward to seeing their business grow over time.

This was a birthday present from my husband and I could not have had a better experience! Peter was very knowledgable and therefore, we learned a lot from this. This interactive tour of his Forest Farm gave me a deep appreciation for forest farming, permaculture, plants, and you get to use all your senses here! If you are the type that likes the great outdoors, you will find this adventure very compelling and fun. Most importantly, you will be left an inspired human being. So, do yourself a favor and book this because you will not regret it!

My girlfriend Monique and I had the pleasure of taking part in the experiential education of Peter and Michelle’s Watershed Forest Farm Tour. Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm open arms from Peter, Michelle and their fury, four legged head of security, Badger. Starting off with an introduction to mushroom inoculation and culminating in a delectable verdant garden feast, the tour was ripe with permaculture knowledge. As a lifelong advocate of permaculture, Peter and Michelle definitely affirmed my thoughts on the importance of this type of work and further sparked intrigue into the vast depths of this arena.
Thank you Peter and Michelle!

Peter was more than accommodating when a travel issue caused some scheduling mishaps. We were so grateful for the flexibility and even more grateful after a lovely couple of hours on his farm. The tour was educational, intriguing, engaging, and just so darn pretty. Peter & Michelle’s land is absolutely breathtaking, especially if you’re lucky enough to visit during the fall months the leaves are sure to impress you. Journeying through the farm was fascinating as we wandered through the different areas, and Peter was so informative throughout the tour, allowing ample space for questions and further explanation.
If the tour wasn’t enough, Michelle’s delicious lunch topped off the morning experience. We enjoyed fresh cornbread, fall soup with shitake mushrooms, crisp greens & the most delicious Tulsi tea. I cannot say enough. We can’t wait to head back up to the mountains to learn more!
