What you'll do

Get ready to experience how to make award winning wines on 3 acres. We will meet up in the barn and have an introductory session and get to know our guests. From there we will start the walking tour of our vineyard. We will have an interactive discussion on the various cultivars and why we planted them. There are different ways to trellis the vines and we will show and explain each. We will touch on the various stages of grape development and point them out in the vineyard as each cultivar develops at its own pace. We will continue with discussion about a typical season of growing, harvesting and wine making. After we made our way through the vineyard we will head back to the barn to demonstrate how the grapes are processed and the equipment we use. We'll cover the difference in process between white and red grapes, as well as the winemaking process which starts with fermentation and ends with bottling. We'll visit the temperature controlled cellar and discuss why we use glass carboys, variable volume stainless steel and wooden barrels to age the wines, with plenty of opportunity for questions. Guests will be offered the opportunity to participate in future winemaking activities and even make their own batch of wine.
Other things to note
Be prepared to walk on uneven terrain and be outside for approximately 25 to 35 minutes. Bring a hat and apply sunscreen for protection

My husband and I have been passionately exploring wine since we met in 1981. Owning a vineyard has always been our dream. We relocated from South Africa to Temecula in 2003. In 2010 we bought 3 acres in Wine Country and immediately started planting our vineyard. We produced our first wine in 2012 and never looked back. We have since won numerous awards at the San Diego and Orange County Home Winemakers competitions. We recently completed a Certificate in Viticulture at MSJC and are active members of the Small Winegrowers Association of Temecula and like to tour the winegrowing areas of the world. We want to share our passion and provide a opportunity for you to experience the winemaking process from grape to bottle and inspire future winemakers by showing it is possible for a small winegrower to make award winning wines.

Where you'll be

We will start in our unique barn which was once a horse stable and has been converted to host our winemaking equipment and cellar. Then we will do a walking tour of the vineyard. We will return to the barn to discuss the winemaking process and visit the temperature controlled cellar.

Once in a lifetime adventure! I’ve never learned so much about the culture of wine making ever. This is an experience that Michelle and Dirk Uys make so special for everyone that comes into their space! We will hold this day close to us, and be going back ASAP! Thank you both for also accommodating us even though we were very late!

What a great experience. We honestly didn’t really know what to expect when we booked this, but we were so pleasantly surprised by how wonderful Michelle and Dierks were. The tour itself was so informative, and it’s very clear to see how passionate they are, especially Dierks, about their wine making. We got to try SO many different wines in all different stages of the fermentation process, and we all ended up leaving with at least 3 bottles of wine each because we liked it so much. It was such an intimate and fabulous experience. Thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend if you like the more personal touches!

This experience is a must if you truly care to understand more about or appreciate the art of growing grapes and small scale wine making. Dirk and Michelle share their knowledge and expertise in such a way that you learn a lot and also have fun in that process. We were impressed by how much they cared about their wines which seemed to us more of a labor of love rather than the market or profit-making goals you see of the big wineries nearby. You can tell that they were proud of their best wines. This experience is totally worth your time.
