What you'll do

Children under age 10 are free with 2 adults or more.
We will meet at the Lily Lake parking lot. If you would like to borrow a pair of binoculars, let me know. We will explore the east side of the Lily Lake, watch for waterfowl, mammals and other wildlife. Our walk will be on a paved bike trail and will be an easy stroll. Along the way, we will talk about the Lily Lake's history in Amana's history as well as Native American history. We will talk about the ecology of the lake and it's plants. As we get closer to the Mill Race, we will take a small detour and go to one of the bridges and talk about their history and engineering. Along the backside of the Lily Lake and along the millrace, we will look for wildlife and do some birdwatching and return to the parking lot. Visitors are encouraged to ask as many questions as needed and to engage in the habitat we are visiting. This is a great, easy walk for families and for those looking for an outdoor historical experience in Amana.

I am a biologist who loves to share outdoor experiences. I have been a naturalist for 30 years and have worked in Federal, State and County positions working with the public as an interpreter and guide. I now own my own business at our small farm where we have restored a 4 acre site including a pond, prairie and woodland. It also includes a tipi that we provide for overnight campers. In addition, I still do school programs and summer camps.
The Amana Colonies area is rich in relatively undisturbed wild areas and wildlife viewing, historical and cultural sites. I believe in hands-on experiences and encourage visitors to walk or hike through or to these areas. I am flexible in my presentation for all age groups and can accommodate small groups and families
