What you'll do

I'll lead you around one of my favorite hikes that most people who even live here don't know exists! I moved here for this trail. We'll be greeted by cathedral forest ceilings, hollowed out old redwoods, edible and medicinal plants (my personal favorite parts of the hike!) vista points of the Pacific Ocean and Arcata Bay, and multiple laughing streams that will cross our path and cascade down the hill. I often wild forage on this trail for redwood sorrel and seasonal berries. Depending on group size, time, and physical agility of hikers, I'll show you a hidden waterfall that's above the main trail nestled in a rocky overhang.

Hello! I'm Laura, and I LOVE showing people the hidden gorgeous spots in Humboldt County! I've worked in the outdoor industry for 8 years in 5 different states at summer camps and YMCAs teaching outdoor Ed to school groups and leading a kazillion outdoor activities including guided hikes. I've been a certified Wilderness First Responder (advanced first aid) for 7 years. I'm also a certified California Coastal Naturalist with the Friends of the Dunes and UC Davis.

I've been fascinated by the outdoors since I was a kid. I was dissecting flowers in the backyard to see what wonders were hidden inside and couldn't help but share my findings with anyone who would listen. The trees and rivers, rocks and mountains... everything- they all have lessons to be learned and personalities to be known.

Where you'll be

We'll be on the Beith Creek Trail. It's a moderate-easy 2.8 mile loop trail through the friendly redwood forest along the edge of the Sunny Brae neighborhood. We'll cross about 8 different small seasonal rivers. The trail follows the hillside up and down about 600 hundred feet with frequent gentle inclines and declines with 1 short fairly steep part in the middle.

If you’re even remotely interested in checking out the local forest and don’t know where to start, this is it! Laura is such a kind, sweet and knowledgeable guide. It felt like hiking about with a friend. She greeted us with a warm smile and a really great ice breaker that set the tone for the afternoon. The hike is easy and beautiful with lots of stops to learn new things. Thank you so much, Laura Jess and Aaron

What a wonderful experience. Coming from the city, I don't get to see places like this ever. It was magical. The trees, the fresh air. It rained while we were hiking (it was actually really cool!) and we got to see the fog and mist rolling through the forest. It then got sunnier towards the end of the walk and was so beautiful. Laura is very friendly and obviously passionate about what she does. Such a positive experience.

The redwoods are right in my backyard here but I had never ventured as far as we went! I felt safe and supported lead by Laura who has explored the trails regularly here. It was an easy hike with a short part of the trail inclining, but we took our time connecting with nature and the amazing views! Laura’s knowledge and identification of the plants was fun to witness and I enjoyed hearing her observations about the evolution and growth of the plants throughout the seasons. I enjoyed talking with her on the hike, she’s very open and welcoming!

Laura was great! Very fun and passionate energy. Even though it rained on us we had a great time and soaked it all in! She was also very knowledgeable about the town which was helpful to someone visiting. She also had a wealth of knowledge regarding the plant life and trees. Thank you Laura!

Really a lovely walk with Laura! We went on a walk that we never would have found ourselves, and it was really great to have Laura leading and also educating us and sharing her enthusiasm for the outdoors and the Arcata area! It was great to have an activity so close to Eureka/Arcata, as the bigger national and state parks are a bit of a drive. I'd suggest doing this on the first day of a trip if you are new to the area, as you can get introduced to the outdoors and also get oriented to the local food, culture, and outdoor activities! Thanks, Laura!

We had so much fun on our hike with Laura. The hike itself wasn't too challenging and Laura had a lot of knowledge to share! She was very upbeat and positive and provided us with laughs all along the way. It was an experience I won't forget.
