What you'll do

You will be picked up by a comfortable modern vehicle. We will travel in a small group for 25 minutes to the location . Once kitted up with headlights and red night torches we will begin a 2 km walk through the darkness of a native New Zealand forest. Along the way we will encounter towering trees and cascading waterfalls, giant silver ferns lighting up like fire works . The highlight would have to be the glowworms as breath taking as our clearest night sky. You will be able to get up close and fully understand this amazing creature. No two nights are ever the same. Wallabies and possums patrol the area, Weta and other insects can be encountered.

Hi I'm Stephen and I have a small tour business called Real Rotorua. I grew up on a farm and spent my childhood exploring the native forest which I was surrounded by, today I still have that passion for the outdoors and share that knowledge with my two boys. I have had a range of Jobs from a mechanic to driving 40 tonne trucks but guiding is my passion . I have been guiding for more than 3 years and hold Department of Conservation guiding permits. Meeting people and sharing is what makes me tick.

Absolutely amazing. Stephen is very knowledgeable and friendly. He is really passionate about what he does and made the whole experience very special. We are a couple of middle aged people and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I would have thought that kids of all age would love this too. Highly recommended.

The highlight of our Rotorua trip! The night tour with Stephen was absolutely wonderful! We saw a plethora of wildlife, learned a lot about the local flora and fauna, and saw some gorgeous sights! I will recommend this to everyone I know who goes to Rotorua.

This was such an amazing experience and I am so grateful we found it! Stephen’s knowledge of the area, all of the plants and trees, the animals and insects were not only interesting but useful and told in ways that I will remember them. He made each section of the hike special with creative stories and took the time to take some incredible photos of my friend and me lit up in this amazing forest. The glow worms were of course special but the entire tour - seeing the stars so clearly, watching wallabies in the wild, and getting an intimate view of a beautiful wildlife conservation - far exceeded my expectations. Ending it on Rosa’s perfectly brewed hot chocolate and a biscuit was a special and unexpected ending to a perfect evening. I recommend this not only for tourists, but locals looking for a different view of your town. So happy!!

On arrival to the location we were welcomed straight away by a wallaby in the distance, which we later got to see close up. We learnt a lot about glow worms, native trees & what plants you can eat in the forest. As soon as you meet the host, you will feel very welcomed and comfortable to ask any questions about the experience. The host is very knowledgeable in everything and will even share facts about Rotorua you may not know as a non-local. At the end you are also given a nice hot chocolate which will warm you up. We really enjoyed our time being in the calm & quiet time of the forest hours and would 100% recommend :)
