What you'll do

After a good hour's drive from Vienna, we reach our starting point, the famous medieval village of Dürnstein. Its charm and the gorgeous landscape surrounding it will delight you.

During our hike, we will enjoy fantastic views over the surrounding hills, the Danube, the castle ruins, and the village of Dürnstein. Inhale the air, filled with aromatic scents of the holm oaks, pine trees, rocks and wildflowers. Lean against the sun-drenched rocks and feel their power. This unique landscape has an almost Mediterranean touch and resembles the ones in Southern Europe.

Ascents and descents are steep in places and you must have adequate physical fitness. You must be free from vertigo and sure-footed. Please note that the path is very rocky, stony and rooted and can be slippery without the right shoes.

After having reached the highest point of the hike, we continue with the ascent through a beautiful landscape with holm oaks and interesting rock formations, until we reach the castle ruins, where the English king Richard Lionheart was imprisoned centuries ago. Walking time is approx. 3 hours, depending on individual speed.

We will visit the Christmas market in the Dürnstein Palace (Sat & Sun in December, optional) before heading back to Vienna.

MEETING POINT is easily reachable by Vienna subway U4 (15-min ride from city centre Opera/Karlsplatz).

Hi, I'm Karin. I'm the founder of Das Leben Spüren - Embrace Life, an outdoor activity organiser, offering guided hiking tours and excursions for travellers, expats and locals. Already before that, I voluntarily organised similar trips for a global expat network. I am a professional hiking guide and have a master in tourism & leisure management. I love meeting people from all over the world as much as I love nature. Combining both and showing travellers the natural beauties of my home country is what I enjoy most. Besides my passion for nature and exploring new trails, I love yoga, photography, gardening, fashion and delicious food. On my tours, I invite participants to be present at the moment by finding joy and contentment in the sheer beauty of nature, rather than boring them with facts and figures.

Where you'll be

Before we start our hike in the surrounding hills, we visit the famous medieval town of Duernstein. This hiking trail is considered one of the most beautiful in the entire Wachau region and offers fantastic views over the valley. The unique landscape has an almost Mediterranean touch with its holm oak forests. We will visit the striking castle ruins of Duernstein before ending the day in one of the local wine taverns.

My husband and I had a few days in Vienna and wanted a chance to get out of the city to hike in nature and experience beautiful views of the Austrian landscape. We didn’t want to spend time researching the details of the hike and spend time looking at maps but to be fully immersed and enjoy the day. Karin was the perfect guide for this. She planned every detail. We met her at the designated place and found a friendly, prepared person who was extremely polite and willing to engage in discussion according to our pace. She was on top of the entire logistics. We had an exquisite hike and learned so many things about local history and nature. She set a hiking pace based on her sense of our fitness and we ended the day enjoying a delicious meal at the village tavern after an invigorating excursion. Karin is a very special person. We highly recommend her to take you out solo or a group. She’s an excellent communicator in advance to determine which hike is best for you based on your needs. You are lucky if you get this opportunity;)

This was such a great experience! I love nature, but also love exploring different cultures and this was a perfect mix. Karin was great! It was just the 2 of us but it was a perfect day. She also gave me great suggestions for exploring Vienna as I love the outdoors! Highly recommend her “Wachau for Adventurers” tour!!!

We had a terrific time with Karin. The trip was well planned, the hiking route interesting, and Karin’s input and guidance indispensable. A fitting wrap-up to our trip was a nice stop at the local bakery and a few items bought from village merchandisers. We are hoping to be back to Austria for hiking and are sure will avail ourselves to Karin’s touring/hiking services again!

The great place and exited trip with Karin! We had an unforgettable experience and enjoyable hiking. It's not difficult and heavy, but it can be a little difficult for beginners who are without any sports training. I recommend it for all who loves mountains, sightseeing, nature and history (the old ruins and a nice village on the way there).

More tips

Please note: for this hike, you need proper hiking shoes/boots with a good grip, because the terrain is very rocky, rooted and partly steep uphill/downhill. As well, you must be free vom vertigo and sure-footed. Compared to my other Wachau tours this is the most difficult in terms of the terrain.

What to bring

For this trip, you need shoes with good grip (preferably hiking boots), because the terrain is rocky in parts
