What you'll do

Our Sailing Basics class picks up from our Introduction to Sailing and will give you the basic sailing skills. We will spend additional time on rigging and tacking, and move on to cover jibing, sail trim, sailing upwind and downwind, and collision avoidance rules. We will spend a short period of time on the boat at the dock, going over some of the information, then head out for an educational and skill-building hands-on experience. We leave from the Canton area of Baltimore and sail into the harbor. From there, we typically move to the more open water of the Patapsco river. We limit the experience to five people to ensure that each gets quality hands-on time with various components of sailing. All of this is under the instruction of a certified US Sailing Master Instructor Trainer and US Coast Guard licensed Captain on a 36' sailboat documented as a US Coast Guard commercial vessel which exceeds required safety and insurance requirements.

Learn more about Steve

Steve

I am the founder and director of SeaAffinity, Inc, a Baltimore based non-profit that combines my two passions of sailing and helping people learn. My wife, Suzanne, and I learned to sail over 20 years ago, on small boats. Since then, we have owned and sailed close to 50 different boats of all sizes in the Chesapeake and the Caribbean, and delivered sailboats on the east coast. I am certified as a US Sailing Instructor, Instructor Trainer, and Master Instructor Trainer, and a member of US Sailing's National Faculty, the group that develops and writes US Sailing's training materials.

About the organization

SeaAffinity, Inc

Our Mission: Challenging youth and adults, including those impacted by disabilities, to develop life skills and realize their potential through water related experiences. Our lessons and sailing outings directly fund our non-profit outreach programs.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to SeaAffinity, Inc.

What's included

Equipment
We provide our beautiful Sabre 36 sailboat as well as all required safety equipment.

Where you'll be

We leave from the Canton area of Baltimore and out into the harbor and Patapsco River on our 36' Sabre sailboat. We'll sail past Ft McHenry and the industrial area of Baltimore. The Patapsco river gives us plenty of room for hands-on training.

Guest safety

Outdoor activities carry risks, and you may be exposed to dangerous situations as part of this experience. Make sure you can participate safely given your abilities and the conditions (such as location, weather, and equipment).

Things to keep in mind

Cancellation policy

Any experience can be canceled and fully refunded within 24 hours of purchase, or at least 7 days before the experience starts.

Communication policy

Always communicate through Airbnb. To protect your payment, never transfer money or communicate outside of the Airbnb website or app.

Guest requirements

Up to 5 guests ages 18 and up can attend. Guests should have had an exposure to sailing. Basic knowledge of parts of the boat is helpful (bow, stern, port, starboard, keel, rudder, etc.)

What to bring

Please dress for the conditions, preparing as you would for a typical outdoor experience. You will not be getting wet (unless we have light rain). We recommend a jacket, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and a water bottle.

More tips

This course builds on the skills learned in our Introduction to Sailing Experience. While that class is not required, we want you to have some degree of experience with sailboats.
