What you'll do

We'll meet at our farm for an initial introduction. Next we'll walk the grounds and explain the relationship between nature and bees, underlining their importance to the eco system. Then, we'll take you through the equipment needed to practise bee keeping, the main events in the beekeeping year, how we manage the swarming season and extract the golden honey. We'll visit one or two of our apiary sites in the locality, and if weather permits we may open a hive to let you see what the inside of a bee colony looks like. Afterwards, we'll return to the farm and try some honey tasting to help you understand the different types of honey available. A relaxing experience enjoying nature and gaining an appreciation of these beautiful, selfless animals.
Other things to note
Decent footwear is key if we are walking - but it should not be too demanding.

I am a 37 year old man who spends his weekends with his family enjoying the countryside and farming life. My summers are spent bee farming with long days spent at different apiary sites, working with my bees. The result is tasty and wholesome honey, which I sell to a large local estate. I've been learning about bees since 2009 and love to share my thoughts and experiences on my passion.

Where you'll be

We're based at a small farm outside Midhurst, set under the South Downs. A former fruit farm, with extensive orchard and woodland, it is a beautiful setting for beekeeping and growing natural food.

We will walk through local heath and woodland, plus visit another of our local apiary sites set on the South Downs, with fantastic views and beautiful countryside.

A wonderful, truly unique experience. We went as a group of 5 ladies on a weekend away and wanted to do something completely different. The experience was fun, educational; getting to experience the bees in their hives was something we'll never forget. David and Catherine are wonderful hosts who are very knowledgeable and really make you feel welcome. A truly brilliant morning and one we will recommend to others for sure!

Really great insight into beekeeping and is completely appropriate as an introduction or if you already have some knowledge and experience. David was great, insightful and engaging. The experience went beyond what I expected in that the information was really holistic and not just what you can Google. Its great to see someone who has a real passion for what they do too! The weather was maybe a bit cooler than ideal for the bees but we still got to get up close and personal with them. Honey tasting was brilliant too!

Highly recommend the beekeeping experience with David. Very relaxed day spent on the farm and got some great insight into the lives of bees and the art of beekeeping. Especially enjoyed the tasting of different kinds of honey.

Great experience that managed to be educational, interactive and fun at the same time. Was amazed at how much we managed to cover within the time as we learnt about how to keep bees, how bees live and interact with the trees and plants around them, and the process of producing honey. Included a close up look inside a beehive (with protective clothing provided), a tasting session in which you learn about the many and varied types of honey and what makes them different, and a short demonstration of the honey production process. David and his partner were friendly and engaging hosts with an in-depth knowledge of what they were talking about. Would definitely recommend for anyone who has ever considered keeping bees or who simply has an interest in how they live and the honey that they produce.

If you're thinking of booking this, DO IT- you will not regret it! Had a fascinating and extremely relaxed and enjoyable time with David and Catherine. Opened up new world. Got to get right into an active hive and understand what was going on in there. Delicious and varied honeys sampled while discussing all aspects of beekeeping, came away with an understanding of how the hives and bees work, what makes great unique honeys, how to get started keeping bees if one wanted to. David is very caring of his bees and his guests, and shared from experience of successes and setbacks. This is an experience that will be remembered by anyone with an interest in nature, farming, and great natural food.
