What you'll do

We'll be exploring the shoreline of Alameda to look for the amazing diversity of bird life: shorebirds, ducks and pelicans, to name a few. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair for an up-close experience while I share the fantastic migration routes many of these birds travel to come to our shores, along with their life stories. We'll explore the rich ecosystem of San Francisco Bay that they depend upon for their "bed and breakfast." After we explore, we'll find a nice spot to sample some "bird friendly" chocolate from local and other top artisanal chocolate-makers while you hear the history of Bay Area chocolate.

I've been a naturalist/guide for over 30 years and enjoy getting folks outdoors to learn about the amazing world of nature we share. I'm in the process of earning my Master Birding Certification. I also have a Chocolate-Tasting program I've been providing to the delight of participants for the last 5 years. We explore the geography and stories of chocolate while sampling delicious, single-origin chocolate bars to learn how each country and small-batch maker creates a different flavor-profile of chocolate.

Where you'll be

We'll meet at Alameda's "South Shore" beach area with nice walking paths, a sandy beach and a marsh overlook. We can modify the walk to best meet the needs of your group. The beach is the longest on San Francisco Bay with about 2 1/2 miles of sand. We'd walk a modest amount of it, with about 1 mile of walking to make sure we have time to watch the birds and explore.

We had a great time with Sharol. Our daughter had arranged the day for us as an anniversary gift so I'm posting this through her account as we can't figure out how else to do it through AirBnb. Despite it being a very windy day, there were plenty of birds to see and Sharol was extremely accommodating - making sure we were warm and comfortable as well as ensuring we saw and learned about lots of birds. The location is really neat. Alameda has a lot to see in addition to the birds and many fun places to eat so it's easy to make a good day with this activity as the centerpiece. The shoreline bird sanctuary attracts a lot of different species (and number) of bird throughout the year so there is a lot to see and learn about. Thanks to the pier and walkways you can get very close to the birds - who don't seem to be spooked by people staring at them. Sharol is very knowledgeable about the birds and very happy to answer questions or simply tell you about what you see. She also ensured we had a good view by providing a spotting scope and she'd checked if we needed binoculars or could provide our own before the day. Access to the meeting spot is easy and there's plenty of parking around. While the bird watching was certainly the highlight of the day, the chocolate tasting was interesting - Sharol had brought a variety of local chocolatier's products to sample along with some tasting notes to help you think about the flavors in each. I enjoyed discovering the variety of tastes from seemingly the same ingredients but it's not something I'd rush to do again - I know others would feel differently though. Sharol made the activity fun for all and shares her expertise on the subject easily. If you're looking for an morning or afternoon activity - whether you have experience bird-watching or not - I'd highly recommend this.
