What you'll do
Here's the "Best of Portland" forest hike and scenic tour - unique to our city - that includes Forest Park, the glorious Pittock Mansion estate with views of city/rivers/mountains, and the best of Washington Park, too. We'll enjoy the famous Wildwood trail, touch the 242' tallest tree in an American city, enjoy a babbling creek + waterfalls, wild birdsong, touch the Old Stone House, and snap selfies at the summit viewpoint overlooking Portland and Mt Hood. On clear days see 4 Cascade volcano peaks! Wow... and that's just the first half!
We then continue downhill, stepping on the elegant Walker footbridge (brand new Oct-2019!) for two more glorious Wildwood trail miles through Washington Park and Hoyt Arboretum, relax on a bench of the Redwood forest deck, inspect exotic, well-marked trees from around the world, and finish at our famous Japanese Garden and International Rose Test Garden complex (tour on your own if you wish).
This 5-mile hike with 900-foot vertical gain is perfect for fitness seekers, will last 3 - 3.5 hours and I'll tailor it for you! Want a 2-hour version? Decide at the top to grab a Lyft/Uber to skip the 2nd half. Waste no precious vacation time: our trail's start and end are less than 3 miles from Portland's center, a few minutes by car.
COVID safety: We will all wear masks and maintain social distance. I'll have hand sanitizer for all to use.
Other things to note
Bring light layers for a 3-hour outdoors experience. It's a splendid hike in the rain, but bring a raincoat + hat/hood. Comfy walking/running shoes or light hikers are best for our unpaved forest trail.

This hike is my personal favorite hike in Portland's Forest/Washington Park complex. I've done it countless times over 15 years, leading many people and groups. With 900' of elevation gain it's strenuous if done quickly, but the beauty, nature and photo spectaculars along the route beg one to move more slowly....
Where you'll be
This is an incredible hike and all inside Portland city limits, which will be hard to believe once you step onto this natural forest + creek trail. Free parking on street. Meet under covered picnic area next to bathrooms. This wild forest hike has creature comforts, too, including fresh mountain water fountains and flush toilets at beginning, on top and end.

My boyfriend and I thought everything went better than expected! This was our first time in Portland and we only had one day to explore/hike and doing the hiking experience with Mark was the right choice because actually learning specifics about the trees/park etc as we hiked took it to a new level. We both enjoyed the hike and felt COVID-19 safe the whole time as everyone wore masks! Everything went smooth from the meet-up to the end. We honestly had no complaints. Mark is also a great photographer, we got some great picture thanks to him!

Mark is great- he really tries to tailor your experience to things that interest you, and is patient with newbie hikers. He loves nature and Portland, and gave us such a great understanding of the City, it’s people and priorities.
There is a lot of uphill walking - but Mark stops frequently to show you fun things along the way, and he breaks up the hike into manageable bits, so you never feel hurried or overwhelmed with the hike. He also keeps you well-informed of where you are in the bigger picture of the hike, AND in Portland itself.
The hike itself is gorgeous. Even in the winter, we were surrounded by beauty. One of favorite experiences in Portland - if you have the time, and like to hike - you must meet Mark and let him show you Portland’s “greatest hits” of parks.

We could have done this hike by ourselves but it would not have been nearly as fun. Mark and Laura provide lots it great information and were so friendly. I especially like the map he sent afterwards that included photos at key points. Highly recommended.

Mark made us feel welcome from the start- we were greeted like old friends and offered a selection of snacks to choose from for the hike. Everything ran on time and as promised. Mark seemed genuinely happy to be hiking with us and was full of stories and lessons and information about Portland and the parks. We kept a good pace with stops when appropriate, especially for photos and tales. We completed the hike feeling like we had burned some calories and with an appreciation for a beautiful and historical slice of Portland - both natural and manmade. Even the ride back to the starting point was fun and informative. The photos and video we got the next day was a nice bonus too.

Such a beautiful experience. Not too strenuous, but still good exercise. Beautiful waterfalls, historical sights, entire view of Portland, educational, lots of different types of trees, mushrooms, animals, snails etc. Mark is such a cool guy. And as for the package experience, definitely the biggest bang for your buck! Great for honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays etc. Would recommend 10/10.
