What you'll do

Arrive at Kesennuma Station, and I'll pick you up there! From there, we'll head to Otokoyama Honten Sake Brewery. Otokoyama Honten was founded in 1912, and has been proudly brewing sake in Kesennuma for over 100 years. They are most well-known for their "Sotenden" sake, which has received awards all over the world. In the 2011 Tohoku tsunami, Otokoyama Honten's corporate office and storefront was destroyed. The brewery though, survived, and they restarted their sake-making operations from the very next day after the disaster. In the aftermath of the tsunami, making sake wasn't just a matter of local pride, it was a way for the brewers to inspire their community to pick themselves back up and move forward in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. At the brewery, my good friend Hiroki, a 5th generation sake-brewer will guide us through the different stages of sake-brewing and explain the equipment used at the brewery. We'll get to see sake in various stages of fermentation. Finally, the best part! Sake tasting! You'll get a chance to sample a variety of Otokoyama Honten's products, including the hard-to-find seasonal brews!

Nishant

I'm an American living in Tohoku, Japan since 2014! In addition to working for the Kesennuma Tourism Bureau. I'm also a foodie and sake-lover, so I can introduce you to the best spots to eat and drink in town. My friends at Otokoyama Honten, one of Kesennuma's two local sake breweries have opened up their facility to guests from around the world. So it would be a pleasure to take you there for a sake tour! Kesennuma might be far off the beaten path for most visitors to Japan, but I truly believe that there are unique experiences here that you won't find anywhere else. Whether it's hunting for the best seafood and sake, or just hanging out with the locals, I want to arrange experiences to make your time in Kesennuma memorable.
