What you'll do

The Punta Islita Wild Macaw Reserve is a must-see for anyone who wants to experience the natural wonders of the area and see truly remarkable charismatic birds. Take a tour through a dry tropical jungle on the Pacific slopes of Costa Rica’s gorgeous Nicoya Peninsula, just minutes from the beautiful Playa Islita. Visitors are welcomed with a short slideshow about Macaw Recovery Network ’s conservation efforts. A tour guide will take you to watch our released wild flock of Scarlet Macaws as they fly in from the surrounding area for their morning or afternoon snack. Meet the macaws

Native to the jungles of Costa Rica, these colorful Macaws enjoy playing, socializing, preening, and making funny sounds (500 different sounds, to be exact). They also happen to be monogamous creatures who mate for life and can live up to 70 years!

About the organization

Macaw Recovery Network

Macaw Recovery Network is a Costa Rican nonprofit committed to the conservation of endangered tropical parrots. MRN is guided by science and years of experience as it builds a future where parrot populations thrive again in the tropical forests. MRN monitors and protects wild populations, rescues and releases parrots and manages habitat with an active program of community outreach and engagement.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Macaw Recovery Network.

Where you'll be

Our visitor center is easily found by signage, 45 minutes east of Playa Samara along the coast. Upon arrival at the center, you are in a shaded building for about 20 minutes to enjoy learning about our efforts and seeing the Macaws from a viewpoint area. You will then walk down some 25 steps (100 feet) for a closer view and more information. Once photographs have been taken, people are guided back up for more information and a final wrap up.
