What you'll do

On this hiking tour, we will discover the beauties and gems of the Wachau region - charming towns and amazing UNESCO protected landscapes.

We will wander through the historical districts of the towns of Stein and Dürnstein - gothic, renaissance and baroque ensembles delight our eyes. Starting in Stein and following ancient panoramic wine trails, we finally reach our destination, the medieval village of Dürnstein. In its famous castle ruins, the English king Richard Lionheart was imprisoned centuries ago.

We will have the chance to visit a traditional wine tavern and try some local wine and food (optional) before heading back to Stein and further on to Vienna.

Walking time will be approx. 2,5-3 hours, depending on individual speed. For this hike, you should have an average fitness level.

Travelling time from/to Vienna is approx. 2 hours back and forth. The ticket for the short public bus ride is EUR 2.40 (to be paid directly on the bus).

MEETING POINT is easily reachable by Vienna subway U4 (15-min ride from city centre Opera/Karlsplatz).

Hi, I'm Karin. I'm the founder of Das Leben Spüren - Embrace Life, an outdoor activity organiser, offering guided hiking tours and excursions for travellers, expats and locals. Already before that, I voluntarily organised similar trips for a global expat network. I am a professional hiking guide and have a master in tourism & leisure management. I love meeting people from all over the world as much as I love nature. Combining both and showing travellers the natural beauties of my home country is what I enjoy most. Besides my passion for nature and exploring new trails, I love yoga, photography, gardening, fashion and delicious food. On my tours, I invite participants to be present at the moment by finding joy and contentment in the sheer beauty of nature, rather than boring them with facts and figures.

Lovely trip. I would recommend it especially for summer or later spring. It was cold in March and not too much green but I expected that. Karin was very nice and we had great conversation. Overall a super nice experience but would recommend more for warmer times

The entire hike was well organised with exceptional views throughout the hike. Karin was also very easy to connect with which made the hike special - it was much like going on a hike with a friend. The last stretch of uphill hike was tiring but it was fairly short and Karin fits in breaks as needed so if you have a general level of fitness it will be ok. Overall, a nice change in scenery from the city, especially if you are here for a longer time.

Karin’s guide of Wachau was wonderful. She has a real passion for hiking, and I wouldn’t be able to find the trail on my own if she wasn’t there. She was very knowledgable about the area, and along the trail she would tell you about various plant species, fruits, and shared countless fantastic view spots. I would definitely do more hiking experiences with her when I’m in the area next time!

Karin’s trip was a wonderful experience. The meetup point was simple because she communicated exactly where and how I should get there. She selected an easier location for me since one of the metro lines was under construction. The hike was filled with rolling hills with beautiful views at each corner. When we arrived in Durnstein, we tasted some of the great wine from the vineyards that we hiked through. Karin is kind and personable, and she made this a great experience. If you want to see a true Austrian village, have some exercise, and enjoy some views, this is a great trip for it.

What an incredible, heart-warming, mind-opening, and unforgettable experience I had on this hike in Lower Vienna. We hiked for over 3 hours through the Wachau region, and through the midevil towns of Stein and Dürnstein. I fell in love with Vienna on this trip. And I’m so grateful to have taken this tour with my guide, Karin (who is my new best friend, for sure). She has an amazing spirit and we spent the day solving the world’s problems while also getting our workout on. It was truly a special experience. For those of you living in Vienna or traveling here, please note that Karin has multiple trip options. I would have done all of them if I had the time. And I for sure will be back to do more. Enjoy!
