What you'll do

First acquaintance with the guest to explain the activity and above all to put it at ease in front of the work we are going to do together. Just tranquility, calm and slowness are required :) Confidence with work tools, then glass, copper rod and torch. Detailed explanation of the procedure of creating a simple round bead with demonstration. Accompanying the guest with gestures and words until the learning of the first phase. Starting with the next step (ex: introduction of decorations on the pearl, change of shape, etc.). The work is adapted to the times and the capacity of the guest. In this activity, as in music, there is a rhythmic part, a melodic part and a harmonic part. The rhythm is about slowness, the melody is about being at ease, harmony is the stimulation of the guest's imagination. If the guest stays in Venice for more than 2 days, it will be possible to create with Alis, my wife, a design with the beads that she/he will have created, to then bring home a necklace, a bracelet, some earrings or a simple pendant.

I am a glass craftsman, I have been working in Venice for 20 years, and it's 15 years , after having graduated from the Abate Zanetti School of Glass in Murano, which I create unique pearls with Murano glass which I then transform into jewels with my wife in our shop.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. I came to Venice wanting to understand more about the ancient process of creating glass beads and and that is exactly what happened. And I made several beads! Moulaye is a knowledgeable, patient instructor and it was a pleasure meeting and talking to his wife Alice, who has a great background in fine arts. When I asked Moulaye how sommerso beads are created he was happy to show me. I really enjoyed spending the afternoon in their studio. I loved this experience.

The experience is fun as you get to sit and practice in the workshop of a truly wonderful lampworker. Their beads and jewelry are beautiful. Note that there is just one lamp that both the instructor and each student uses in turn. There were 2 students in my class and I would have liked more time at the lamp. If there were 5 people in the class (which is the maximum) I would imagine that the time spent practicing at the lamp would be minimal and perhaps not worth the effort. Advice: try to arrange it so there are as few students as possible to get as much practice time at the lamp. Also note that the lamp is in the shop where their beautiful beads and jewelry are sold. Customers and others will walk in and will watch you as you work. If that sounds distracting or unwelcome I suggest looking for an experience elsewhere.

It was the first time I tried Airbnb experiences, and what a success it was! I fell totally in love with the glass and lampworking. Moulaye is a great teacher, it was so interesting and fun to learn! I made some very cute beads, and will use them for necklaces. Thank you Moulaye for this unique experience!

Two of the most beautiful & kind people I have ever met, through and through. I booked the workshop as a surprise for my sister who was a glassblower in university & she was delighted for an introduction to lampworking. Moulaye is a great teacher, he is patient & really shows you it is a holistic, full-bodied approach, where you must be calm & take your time. You see how it truly influences the quality of your artwork. It was wonderful to talk about his experience at the Abate Zanetti School, but most excited that Moulaye himself also offered a one-week apprenticeship course in bead-making, something well worth a return to Venice for my sister. Moulaye is also an accomplished musician & we were lucky enough to witness one of his concerts while in town. Seeing his brilliance on percussion and drums helped us understand his approach to lampworking even better. Alice, his wife, makes gorgeous necklaces and other jewelry pieces. They both work in the shop together. I learned so much just browsing the different types of glass beads in their shop, some with stone-like finishes I never even dreamed glass could do. Seeing them work together as a very loving and artistic team is so inspiring. We were so blessed to have met Moulaye & Alice. They were absolutely the sweetest, kindest, most considerate hosts & teachers. They even treated us to lunch! Highly recommend if you have time, don’t rush, and you will learn so much.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! How many can say they've worked Murano glass with a master in Venice! Moulaye has many years of experience and it shows with his coaching. Both he and Alice are friendly and patient. They even offered to mail our items home for us as we weren't sure we could schedule the pick up 4 hours later. Three of us took this workshop together, and made some beautiful beads. We're so glad we did this!
