What you'll do

We will meet up in the old City Cemetery and I’ll fill you in on some of the well known writers who have wandered through Sacramento literary history before heading out to tour various landmarks related to Raymond Carver, Ernest Hemingway, Joan Didion, and more. You’ll see where Maya Angelou liked to relax with a glass of wine, where a 50s suburban housewife churned out lesbian romance novels (which now have a huge cult following)and where the love letters of JD Salinger were plagiarized. Sacramento has been the host of many a surprising literary occurrence...

NYT bestselling author, former Random House Editor, and literary historian, steeped in the creative scene here in Northern California for the past thirty years. I am always chasing down new information and secrets about writers who have passed through the Sacramento area (Mark Twain! Jack Kerouac! Oscar Wilde! Joan Didion! Maya Angelou! Raymond Carver!) and have designed an amusing tour that will take you behind the scenes and leave you with a deeper understanding of this creative capital.

Where you'll be

From the Old City Cemetery and it’s famed vintage roses and impressive carved statuary to the Senator Hotel across from the California State Capitol building to farther flung parts of the region where Joan Didion taught herself to type by copying Hemingway stories to the Parkside home of a bestselling author who knew both Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein, this three hour tour will give you an overview of Sacramento’s role in the literary scene.

Jennifer obviously has a great passion for her topic and has done a great deal of research, which she shares using both facts and anecdotes while driving to some of the prettiest parts of Sacramento. She had physical copies of all the books related to her stories which I thought was a nice touch. I would have liked a reading list of those books or other books by the authors she mentioned (and I'm sure she would have sent me one if I'd thought to ask at the time). My own experience was marred a little by the very late arrival of other guests who had signed up for the tour and apparently had gotten confused about the time, although Jennifer's instructions were explicit and accurate. At that point they pulled the tour in a direction that didn't interest me. But I'm sure that was a one time thing and admire Jennifer for making the extra effort to accommodate them.

Jennifer really knows her Sacramento literary history, and if this is a topic that interests you, her tour is a MUST. She makes fascinating connections between a variety of well know writers who have passed through Sacramento in one form or another. Very unique! In addition, she's a wonderful host. She made a variety of accommodations for my party, communicated accurately and promptly, and the whole experience was extremely smooth. Great job Jennifer!

Meeting up with Jennifer at the Old Cemetery was the perfect start to the tour. I need to reference I'm somewhat biased - I'm from San Francsico and literary talent there is unsurpassed. Jennifer provided a comprehensive, knowledgeable and entertaining tour of what literary talent Sacramento has to offer;)

A resident of Sacramento and a writer myself, I thought I knew a lot about authors in Sacramento, but little did how much I'd missed in all my readings. Joan Didion is one of my favorites and there was a lot about her, but other authors and unique stories I never heard about including Earl Stanley Gardener, Aimee Crocker's Bohemian lifestyle, William Vollomon. Who knew that Raymond Carver had managed an apartment complex and worked as a janitor in the hospital where Didion had been born. Amazing. Reminded me of the London Walks tours we take in the UK.

Jennifer's tour was spectacular! We are Sacramento residents, but are relatively new to the area and didn't know anything about its literary history. Jennifer's stories were fantastic and funny and we felt like we got an extra special tour of our new home.
