What you'll do

We will first meet at Shatila, one of the most popular Arabic pastry shops in Dearborn to enjoy Arabian tea or Turkish coffee and get to know one another. Next, we will meet at one of the largest middle-eastern supermarkets where we'll savor the delicious scents of Arabic food and learn about the different cuisines of the Arab world. Learn why Arabs only eat with their right hand? Why some women wear a covering and others don't? What is it like in a traditional Arabian household?
We'll discuss answers to these questions & many more. Lastly, we'll have an immersive culinary experience at one of the most popular middle eastern restaurants of our choice ( Lebanese, Yemani, or Iraqi cuisine ) where we will enjoy the delicious aromas and flavors of Arabic food while engaging in conversations about traditional Arabic hospitality.
Other things to note
Dress casually and wear comfortable shoes. Bring your camera. You'll also need to provide your own mode of transportation to all of the three locations mentioned.

I was born & raised in the Arab world, moved to Australia at the age of 15 then settled in Detroit as an adult. I'm a world traveler who's passionate about history, art, music, food, and the joy of meeting new people. I have been working as a tour guide for the Arab American Museum for nearly 6 years.
Within the Arab countries, I've been to Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, UAE, and Kuwait. Plus I have 12 siblings so I'm well versed in Arabian family life and on many other issues. Ask me anything!!
Please note that you can also check my availability on dates that are not on the calendar to suit your schedule. I also offer evening experiences which would include the bakery, the museum, and a hookah place for groups of 4 and more.

I did this experience with my sister, who hasn’t been able to travel and experience a lot, and I wanted to start opening those doors for her. For me, it’s hard to know what is safe and not because of the Pandemic, but still want to experience new things. Our time with Raf was amazing. We both learned a lot of really great things and we felt very welcomed to ask any questions that came to mind. My sister had an amazing time and was so grateful for the experience.. I mean we both were, but it was most important to me that she had a good time. I’d highly recommend!!

Raf was tremendously friendly, and informative. He also was quick on his feet and managed to find substitute activities when plans had to change due COVID-19 closures. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about Arabic culture through food with him.

I cannot convey how absolutely wonderful Raf was. The Arab American Museum was closed due to concerns about Covid-19, and he took us instead to a Middle Eastern grocery store, where he walked us through and explained various parts of food culture in Arabic, and gave brief history lessons as they related to the topics at hand. He was so genuine and kind and passionate about the cultural experience. We felt well taken care of and informed at every location. He gave us several suggestions on other related places we could go, which we plan on visiting on future trips to the area (we have to come back when the museum is back open!). I cannot recommend those experience highly enough.
