What you'll do

First I explain a little about what is special about “Akahada-yaki”. Then I hand over the raw clay to guests for appreciation and touching.Imagine this clay will be given life and become a work in your daily life! Have in your mind a image of your own design. Eg. If you participate with your partner, making same teacups for each other might be a memorable experience! I will also advise for your design from easiness of making or solidity in use. When design is finished, then we start building and shaping by wheel throwing. (See my demonstration!) It’s really a fun to turn a wheel! You can either concentrate in your work, or get more inspiration watching at my works in the gallery.
Final step is to scrape and write your name at the bottom of your work.
That’s how it works! And let’s have a tea break and Japanese sweet over imagining the finished condition of your work. I will dry and bake your work, then duly pack it , which takes 2 to 3.5 months in total till dispatching for shipment. (International shipment cost should be additionally paid at the class. For some countries shipment may not be possible, please ask.)
Other things to note
If you would like our international shipment of your completed pottery, please check with us the cost and delivery acceptability by country.

Nara has its own traditional local pottery, and the most popular pottery class is now introduced on Airbnb!
Akahada-yaki is one of the traditional pottery started in 16c by the order of Lord Toyotomi, using clay from Mt.Akahada of Nara. Amazing thing is I myself go and take the clay, and use it in our class! Akahada-yaki's most beautiful feature is the reddish color of unglazed part of the pottery! I am one of the descendants of the ancient pottery family, and devoted my 30yrs’ life in to pottery alone! Why not enjoy together making your only one Akahada-yaki work at my atelier& gallery?

Where you'll be

My atelier is just one minute walk from Kintetsu Nara station. My recommendation of your day plan is to first visit Todaiji and Nara park, and spend your afternoon here. You can appreciate my works in the gallery, or relax at the first floor café (famous for Tapioca drinks) before or after the class. Nara’s sightseeing info is also available in the café. The 3 word address is ///betrayed.vets.gravy

It was a great experience! Masashi let us choose what we wanted to do from the collection displayed in the workshop. We chose three different objects and used them as reference for our creations. It was our first time working on pottery and Masashi was very nice in explaining everything and help us when we couldn't understand how to proceed or had made mistakes. Looking forward to see the final product when they will get delivered!

His experience was better than I could have imagined. My friend and I decided to try it out and figured we would have a lot of fun...yet we were still blown away by his warm welcoming, expertise and teaching ability, and overall friendliness. We made a coffee cup and ramen cup and couldn’t be more excited to receive them a few months from now. I can honestly say I made a few friends during this experience. It’s well worth it and you won’t be disappointed!

Excellent experience! This was our first time making pottery and they were awesome with their advice, help & were very patient with us. One of the coolest things we did in Japan and I can't wait to see how our pottery turns out.

Masashi is an amazing artist who helped us create our own beautiful works of art. He shared tea, snacks, and stories with us and we enjoyed spending time in his workshop chatting after our session. The Flamingo cafe downstairs from the studio prepared the most delicious banana milk bubble tea & offered us free pink face masks for our journey home. Thank you both for a great experience, and your generosity. We are looking forward to seeing our finished pieces!

We really enjoyed the class. Masashi was really friendly. We stuck around for about an hour after talking about cranes, bears, america, food, nara, and whatever else came to mind. We only left after I realized we had gone way past time and were about to miss out on our other plans.
