What you'll do

This experience is a hands-on practice of permaculture and community gardening on the 400 years old estate just outside of our traditional Japanese house.

You'll join our gardening team and get your hands dirty. You can come from 8.30am~9am. We work in the forest garden until 12 noon. Then, we have a seasonal farm to table lunch around 12.30 and the day is over.
If you want, you can have a shower at the end of the experience. This activity is a good follow-up for the voyagers that enjoyed our other experience "Food forest tasting & Japan lord mansion" and want to participate in building the resilience of our community. We call our special place "Niwamori BFF Nara Japan" and we aim to make it a permaculture hub and biodiversity refuge in Nara city.

We will do some gardening activities, talk about how the plants communicate and how to build a healthy soil. You can go at your own rhythm. Relax, enjoy the nature and let the garden "zenify" your soul.

At the end of the session, you'll be able to pick your own organic, seasonal lunch. We are eating this way for the last two years and trust us, it's the tastiest meals we ever had in our lives. Nothing beats a fresh, slow growing, nutrient packed, home grown veggie.

So, what do you say, you'd like to try gardening with us for a few hours? Jump in!
Other things to note
You do not need to have experience gardening to join this program. Please bring extra clothes to change into and wear shoes that can survive a little dirt.
From May to October there are mosquitoes in the field. We recommended to come in long sleeves and long pants.

Climate change adaptation and resilience building are the reason why you should attend this workshop. I am a public-speaker and the creator of a food forest and organic garden in Nara Japan. I will teach you my techniques for natural farming, permaculture, companion planting, foraging, how you can live a more sustainable lifestyle and how to make a place and a neighborhood resilient to outside shocks with real examples. I'm an open book on many sustainability subjects so feel free to come with your questions, we'll have time to answer them while we perform the day tasks. My current goal is to help people become Eden gardeners. Take your destiny in hands, work as a team, learn the Niwamori method.

Jerome is very friendly and helpful, and shared a lot of his living experience in Japan with me, he answered many questions which helped me to confirm the determination to move to Japan, I really apreciate it. Thank you, Jerome! Jerome is an expert in organic farm, provide the knowledge for self sustaining ecosystem, I would like to recommend Jerome's course to anybody who is interested in this area. His house with several gardens is traditional Japanese style with 400 years old history, it is also worthy to see itself. He started to offer the guest stay on Airbnb too, so if you want to experience the really Japanese historical architecture living, please consider staying with him. Jerome will provide the good guidance to enjoy Nara area, feel free to consult him.

It was a great experience with Jerome at the historical rural residence with a large garden even with bamboo tree forest! I had been doing gardening myself depending on lots of insecticides, artificial fertilizers, and water directly from tap, but the idea introduced by Jerome was totally new to me, and I learned a lot from him today how to effectively leverage the best combination of nature ecosystem (fish, insects, bacteria, plants, and animals, weather, etc.) . Also it was the first time for me to know there is a gardening task lunar calendar ( also leveraging the all the nature activities and phenomenon) by date of the year, so I noticed that this experience date of mine has its own unique meaning for annual task along with this calendar, which makes me very excited. Finally sharing the breakfast and lunch using only the vegetables from the garden was so nice with him and his family enjoying the very strong aroma & taste of the plants and freshness. This place is not so far from the center of Nara (Nara park area), so I really recommend the guests from the world to share this experience with him to learn how he evolved his permaculture idea to fit it to the rural Nara, Japan large townhouse garden, climate, and environment! Especially may be good for those who love gardening!

Jerome and Hanako were nice hosts and definitely knowledgeable people! They had a lot of garden space to work with which was not only fun but insightful to take part in. Me and my partner learnt about the importance of composting, safer alternative ways of watering a plant, gathering seeds as well as sowing them afterwards, harvesting bamboo and preparing shoots for cooking as well as the significance of leaving most of your garden up to nature to grow for you. Whatever queries you have about gardening/permaculture or if you'd like some great practical experiences, this is the place to come.
