What you'll do

Reliving the essence of a community and culture.

Born and raised in District 6, I bring a unique perspective on this period of history. How the forced removals decimated the area to pave the way for gentrification.
I will also share how the human spirit can triumph against all odds.

Born and raised in District 6, I have first-hand experience of the negative impact the forced removals had on the community. I am passionate about the rich and vibrant cultures of the district, which still finds expression in the townships on the Cape Flats. The power of the Apartheid regime with all its brutality and oppression, is diminished through the extraordinary capacity of forgiveness.

Where you'll be

District 6 was a community of freed slaves, labourers, tradesmen and businessmen. The impact through the forced removals affected the economic livelihood and the social structure of an entire community.

I really appreciated the fact that Richard took me on the tour even though I was the only guest, as I am sure he could have spent his time more profitably. The value and insight gained about his personal story living there and journey and the exploration of alleys and corridors I might not have gone down were perhaps more meaningful than what I had thought the tour would be, which was a story of the history of the area, part of which certainly was realised. An enjoyable morning most certainly.

Richard gives you a personal, extremely inspiring and thought-provoking insight in the impact of apartheid and how it is possible to move beyond oppression and self-destruction. His experience is a story of how to create meaning and hope for yourself and others, even in very difficult circumstances. I strongly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to understand South Africa today and would like to get a sense of how to bring about change, how to move towards a socially more just and truly free society
