What you'll do

You'll practice seascape photography in the most magical light: around sunrise on the ocean. Meet me at 4 AM at a private dock in Greenport and board my 30-foot sailboat, the Sojourn, where I'll provide safety instructions and the basics of moving on a sailboat with a camera. No sailing experience required.
Then we'll start our photo safari out of Greenport’s quaint Stirling Harbor along moored boats waiting to be photographed at twilight, leading us to a sail between Long Island and Shelter Island towards Bug Lighthouse while the sky brightens and the sun rises. Along the way, we'll discuss photo perspectives, the light situation, framing options, and abstract patterns.
After spending a little time on the waters near the lighthouse, we'll sail into Gardiners Bay along Orient Beach State Park. In the distance, you'll spot off-limit places: Gardiners Island (privately owned) and Plum Island (federal restricted area). You may even get a glimpse of the Hamptons. Stories about the history of these places will inspire new ideas for your photography. To keep us energized, I'll provide coffee, snacks, water, soft drinks, and ice. Sorry, no alcohol on board! Back at the dock at 9AM.

Meet your host, Thomas

I’m Thomas, a professional photographer and filmmaker – and a USCG licensed captain. About 10 years ago, a nautical map store in Manhattan inspired me to explore the 70 islands of NY via sailboat, camera on hand, which led me both to Greenport and to a book contract for “Archipelago New York”. At every book talk I’ve been asked: How do you shoot from a sailboat? That inspired me to share my unique approach to seascape photography through hands-on workshops on the water. I'm originally from Germany, and I love helping fellow photographers find new perspectives through their lenses.

Where you'll be

We'll take all photos from the Sojourn, a 30-foot sailboat. You can store extra clothes and equipment in her cabin. We'll sail from Greenport to Long Beach Bar Lighthouse, and you'll see why locals call it Bug Lighthouse. Gardiners Bay is dotted with fascinating places like mansion-encrusted Shelter Island; the largest private island in the US, Gardiners Island; and urban legends-prone, off-limits Plum Island.
