What you'll do

Slink into the back alleys of San Francisco’s Chinatown and hear true stories from Chinatown's sinister past, when the streets teemed with gambling, opium, and prostitution. We’ll visit Ross Alley, where hidden gambling dens operated behind fortified doors; explore Duncombe Alley, once hazy with the pervasive smoke and forbidden allure of the opium den. You’ll learn about Washington street, where the two most famous crimes in Chinatown history happened 80 feet and 80 years apart. We’ll also disclose the locations of the Chinatown Tongs, powerful secret societies headed by notorious leaders…

Paul

I've been writing about crime history since the 1980s. My column, “Notorious Crooks” appears in the SF Examiner. I created this tour with the late Kevin Mullen, Deputy Police Chief of San Francisco. I’ve also appeared on the ID network as an expert on San Francisco crime. This year I received the Oscar Lewis Award from the San Francisco Historical Association for my writing on San Francisco.
