I am a professional painter and teacher with many years of experience, and host an on-site gallery. I love guiding folks of all ages in learning -- or relearning -- skills in painting and drawing nature. It is amazing to see the transformation, as students learn mastery of tools and techniques, and take home their own artwork!
I learned from masters -- Max Ginsburg, Sebastian Capella, and the École des Beaux-Arts, ENSAD, Art Students League of New York, and La Jolla Arts. I'm a Finalist in ARC, and have an MA with Distinction in Digital Media from London Met.

"Sketching Nature" with Mary was a wonderful experience! I participated along with my partner, Jim. I have quite a bit of experience as an artist but Jim does not yet we both had a really good time and learned a lot. There were 4 of us in the class and Mary gave each of us significant personal time in addition to group teaching. We started the class in Mary's studio where we were equipped with great sketching tool kits (which were ours to keep!) and we learned the fundamentals of sketching objects. We then migrated to an incredibly beautiful seaside location in the Acadia National Park and progressed to sketching landscapes. I think Jim was amazed at how much he learned in just the 7 hours of the class. I also learned a great deal... Mary was very effective at adjusting to each of our skill levels. We were honest when we told Mary at the end of the class that had we known how excellent the class would be we would have signed up for a second one for our short Maine vacation.

The entire day was simply awesome! Mary started our day with a short group intro, then quickly moved into teaching us basics about the whole creating process... exactly what our class of 4 needed... we worked for a couple of hours in her studio (perfectly structured for the class) with everything we needed-and then some... Then we moved to a wonderful location on the coast for an afternoon of drawing under Mary’s patient and positive instruction... This simply could not have been a better day! I’m sure there are other really good artist/instructors in this special corner of God’s world... I can’t imagine a better experience than we had with Mary!

We did a nature drawing class with Mary that ended up being just our three family members. It was a really lovely experience. Mary is warm and friendly and just connected with us right away. I loved her sense of ease and flexibility with our preferences for the class, her deep expertise, and her enthusiastic encouragement of our work. We had planned to do the class outside and Mary gave us several good options for kinds of drawings we could do and locations where we could work. We chose to do scenes of boats on the coast (because it's Maine!) but when it started raining in a was that seemed like more than a passing shower we took photos of our scenes and went back to her classroom/studio to work. As it turned out she had lots of alternate sources to offer at her studio, so we had even more options and made some different choices of what kinds of drawings to do. She really spent time engaging with each of us and our work, giving us specific techniques to use as well as some history of their use, insight on how to apply them to our work, and even sharing personal stories. It was really a great experience for us to have shared - I think all three of us learned more than we expected, and we definitely enjoyed ourselves and would do it again.

What a wonderful experience! Mary is an excellent teacher and was so patient with our small group, all of us pretty much beginner artists. She took us to a great little secret location on the harbor. But we were not lucky with the weather and had to retreat to her studio, but that was great fun too. She had great tips for each of us, gave us any tool we might need, and we left with some beautiful pieces and inspiration to come back again. Southwest Harbor is a charming little town and we had a really delicious lunch, but were eager to come back again to finish our work.
