What you'll do

To begin our experience we require everyone to sign a liability waiver since this is a honey bee sanctuary. We will go over bee yard etiquette and get dressed in protective bee yard attire. We will take a stroll to the honey bee sanctuary and see bees pollinating the Tulsi basil flowers and others along the way. When we get to the apiary, we will learn how to light a smoker and begin a hive inspection demonstration. During this time we will identify honey, pollen, nectar, eggs, brood, queen bee, worker bees, drone bees, pests and much more. We will also closely examine bee biology and the ecology in the hive body. Depending on the season we may even be fortunate to catch a swarm, harvest honey, or make a split if it is needed. Hive tutorials can be customized to focus on certain aspects of beekeeping such as split making, in-depth pest management, correcting cross comb, ect. if needed. We will conclude our hive time together by walking the tools and buckets up to the processing kitchen. There we will honey to sample as well!!
Other things to note:
Inform us of any allergies you may have to bees or pollen before arriving on our property. A liability waiver must be signed before leaving our carport area since bees are abundant on our property.

I have offered beekeeping classes and workshops on the Big Island for ten years. I specialize in treatment-free hygienic beekeeping. My partner & co-host, John Lair and I offer honey bees, natural-cell queens, top bar hives, and pure hive products. I teach an 8 class course at the University of Hawaii~ Hilo which covers bee biology, hive ecology, hygienic hive management and much more. John and I co-teach two apiary days as part of this course. We love to teach together and share our passion for bees and their creations with others.

Did you ever see a genuine person who does what she loves and loves what she does? Did it involve bees? Here it definitely does! There you will see it in action, conquer any lingering apiphobia, and learn as much as you wish about bees, environmental dangers to them and to people, and the Big Island life in general. Five stars all around!!!!

I had so much fun learning how to care for bees with Jen. They are truly fascinating creatures and need to be cared for for our ecosystem to thrive. I wish it was longer than an hour. I probably could have stayed there all day.

What a absolutely amazing gift I gave to my family while we visit Hilo . We so happy from the bottom of our hearts for the experience Jen curated for us . She is the bee 🐝 queen , she literally speaks bee language . Super interacting and helpful for children as well ( we had our 7 years old daughter with us ) If anyone it’s afraid of bees , Jen will demonstrate how kindly and loving bees can be . Highly recommended . I personally have honey every morning with my coffee and tried so many different brands from all over the world . Jens honey it’s the best honey I’ve ever tasted in my life . Thank you Jen , we will definitely come back when we visit Hawaii and see you and your beautiful farm ( she has others beautiful animals that can be interacted with ❤️
