What you'll do

Are you interested in visiting Kanazawa's lesser-known local attractions, not just the TripAdvisor attractions?
Are you excited to cycle and walk in and around Kanazawa City?
Are you curious to learn the good, the bad and the ugly about living in Japan?
Then keep reading!

Take this tour and I'll show you the best parts of Kanazawa City. A city rich in history and culture, I'll explain it all as we walk and cycle through it's beautiful and ancient streets.
I'll explain to you my interpretations of Japanese culture, having lived here for as long as I have, as well as having lovely Japanese (almost) in-laws.

Our tour will start at the spectacular modern Kanazawa Station. We'll walk in to the city centre from here. We'll visit the top attractions and as we do so, I'll explain the story of Kanazawa - I think you'll be surprised!

After this, we'll grab our rental bikes and have a fun ride around town and the suburbs. This part of our tour will almost exclusively be parts of Kanazawa you're very unlikely to visit or find by yourself. The last part of which we'll see us stopping for some delicious matcha overlooking the southern river, with the mountains in the background. From here, I'll bring you back to your destination of choice to end the tour.

If your desired dates aren't available on the calendar, please write me a message. I may be able to offer the tour then!

Safe travels

Hi there!

I'm an Irish triathlete who has called Kanazawa home for 4 years.
I used to be an English teacher for the government, but now I'm a full time professional tour guide.

Whilst in university, I majored in history, with a focus on medieval Japanese history (it's much like Game of Thrones, minus the dragons). I also act as a bespoke route planner for foreign cyclists of all fitness levels visiting Japan.

I came to Kanazawa in 2015 & very quickly fell in love with this city. As a cyclist, I love it. As a student of history, I absolutely love it.

My passion, my goal, what excites me, is to teach and to show guests all of the fantastic things I'm sure they would 1) love to see, but 2) never ever find by themselves. Let's have fun!

** By the way! If you're interested in other tours, please check out my Airbnb profile. Thanks! **

Where you'll be

As the route will zigzag all over Kanazawa City, virtually all of the major tourist attractions will be covered. We'll also explore and enjoy the areas that are quite popular with locals, that wouldn't necessarily be known to tourists or be highlighted on TripAdvisor.

Jonny was an amazing, genuine, thoughtful host with a deep knowledge of the Kanazawa region. Despite raining all day, we walked & meandered around with Jonny telling stories, taking us to places we would never have discovered on our own. It was an incredible experience & we would highly recommend Jonny to anyone wanting to see & understand Kanazawa & it’s deep cultural history. He helped explain many Japanese customs too. We’ll be back for cycling next time & keen to explore the mountains as well. Thanks again Jonny. Geoff, Jen & Harry

I really did not know what to expect on my first Airbnb experience but I gave it a shot and it was the best decision I have ever made. Jonny was the best tour guide I have ever had, I’ve done other agencies before but Jonny went above and beyond to make me feel immersed in the culture. The whole experience was amazing he felt more like a friend than a tour guide and my favorite part was bike riding through the samurai street and and after riding near the river with stunning views. I guarantee you this is the best tour you will ever have! Will be coming back. Thanks again Jonny!

Jonny was a great host for my airBnb experience. In a way i was lucky that i was the only one who attended this tour, and Jonny specifically catered to what i wanted to see and at at our own pace. This experience is more like a friend showing me around. He brought me to the places of interest around Kanazawa and describe to me all the history and background behind, despite him being a foreign expat living there! As i specifically mentioned i wanted to avoid the busy crowd, he delivered! i am beyond words to describe how Jonny is so helpful and attentive to all my needs. and he is also so willing to introduce me to places and restaurant/cafe that i could visit and have my meals (and it is so good!!)

We had a wonderful tour with Jonny! He took time to answer all of our questions and catered the tour to our interests. He also brought a unique perspective as a foreigner that's been living in Japan for several years. The mix of walking and cycling felt appropriate for any fitness levels. I'd highly recommend this tour to any traveling through Kanazawa!

Jonny gave an excellent tour of Kanazawa along with great conversation on life in Japan and life in general. The pace was relaxed yet we covered a lot of ground. Highly recommended!
