What you'll do

Meet your guide at an easy-to-find central location then walk and explore the quaint neighborhoods and streets of Shanghai. Try the best local food in the city at family-run places where only locals go that are truly off the beaten path.

While visiting over 5 food stops, learn about the families that have been making their specialties for generations and learn about the foods that locals love and why each dish and restaurant became so popular. Start by walking through pedestrian streets that come alive with fresh, handmade (and safe) street food only served during the morning. Watch China’s most popular breakfast items prepared before eating them including fried scallion pancakes, jianbing (savory Chinese crepes), and youtiao (Chinese doughnut sticks).

Visit a local wet market to see locals bargaining and buying fresh produce, and see what’s in season. Walk through some of Shanghai’s oldest residential communities to see how locals live their lives every day and learn about this interesting and historic area from your local insider to get a feel for how locals have lived their lives in Shanghai for generations. End your morning by exploring a local temple, tickets included.

Where you'll be

Most of the places that we visit on the tour are small family-run eateries that are open for a long time and frequented by locals. We visit the same eateries every morning on the tour so we know that the food is safe and consistent in quality.

Loved this tour with Annis!!! The food was great but the experience was much more about being exposed to traditional Shanghai daily life then just merely eating. One of the best things I did in China - would highly recommend

I really enjoyed the tour, I would not have known the place without this help. Being able to get a little more into the traditional part of town and get to know its cuisine was an amazing experience, including the interactions with local people and my fellow travelers. Thank you!

This is not really a tour provided by the four people listed as hosts (Ruixi, Olivia, Sherry & Sabrina) but rather organized through Ruixi's company (Lost Plate). It's also listed on their website: https://lostplate.com/shanghai-breakfast-food-tour/.So even though you read about who you may meet on AirBnB, most likely someone else will show up and do the tour. The AirBnB description also used to list the group size as small with a maximum of 10 people and only allows you to book for a maximum of 4 people. When we joined a rather larger group with a group size exceeding 10 and realized that someone else will do the tour, we were caught off guard. The tour was still fun, we saw and tried lots of tasty, authentic food. The neighborhood was interesting to see and our guide made efforts to explain everything and ensure people were comfortable. We provided the feedback of our expectations being different based on what was advertised and I am glad to see the description got updated from when we booked and now provides a better idea of what to expect.

I booked this tour for my first morning in Shanghai. I didn’t want to be hungry for the duration of my stay but wanted an authentic experience. This tour was great! I was introduced to a variety of foods and left feeling like I could find and purchase some of my favorites in the days to come. Thank you and I highly recommend!

We had a lady called Abby who was very friendly with us very informative and we did not get a feeling of being rushed and gave us a really good experience and tour of the area and spending time with the locals. It is a great way of seeing and trying the local dishes and behind the doors of the locals and the history of the area. We had a very good time and thank you

Great breakfast tour! I’ve googled and YouTubed all the different Shanghainese foods I wanted to try during our short trip, however, once I got here, I had no idea where to go or how to order... On our second morning we joined this breakfast tour and wow, it was awesome! We met up in the old Jewish community and walked through super old school shops and markets and was not only a great breakfast opportunity but also a cultural experience! Would definitely recommend!
