What you'll do

We welcome you to an unforgettable, magical, real experience at our home!
We will cook together Japanese style foods(Washoku) and make you feel like you are enjoying a meal with your family or at a friend’s house.
Plan for the day: we will cook rice balls, Japanese style egg omelets, clear soup, broiled fresh fish, Tempura, and fresh vegetable dish with sesame miso -soy sauce marinate sauce.
We will finish by decorating and serving the food in a natural and harmonious way. Desserts called wagashi (Japanese Sweets) from a local sweets confectionery will be served with green tea at our living room.
Our cooking class is an easy demonstration and hands-on lesson. You can drink tea, sake, and relax.
The rice and vegetables are harvested from my mother, uncle’s field, and local farmer’s market. The recipes are printed out for you and I will explain tips and alternative ways so you can cook them in your home and become a master chef to cook for your family and friends!
When you are in our area, you can have 2 UNESCO experiences on the same day!
Washoku is UNESCO intangible cultural heritage experience and the other one is a visit to the world’s oldest surviving wooden structure: the Horyuji Temple. It is only a 10 minute walk from our house so before or after the cooking class, it would be a great way to experience Japan.
Other things to note
We have a cat that lives with us. She is very cute, but if you have allergies…
If you are wondering how to get my home kitchen, let me know and we will talk about the best way to get here!

I am very excited to share my favorite recipes with you at our home kitchen. I love Japanese foods (Washoku) and it makes me feel healthy and thankful for foods and nature.
I learned how to cook Washoku from my family - especially from my grandmother and mother. Gathering around the table with my family, we cooked traditional Washoku for many years. That is how I grew up and learned great recipes.
I have lived in Great Britain, USA for more than a decade studying and working. During those times I missed cooking together with family. As more time goes by, I realize that it is not just cooking. It is cooking together to create unforgettable memories in our lives and it shaped who I am and what I value now. Now, I am very thankful to share our recipes and the culture of Washoku with you from our home kitchen.

After visiting the amazing Nara Park we took a quick train ride to get to Yasuyo and Bill's lovely house. I had booked our experience as a Valentine’s surprise for my wife but it turned out to be precious gift for myself as well! :) Yasuyo and Bill were fantastic hosts and really made us feel at home. Yasuyo showed us her grandmother’s recipes to cook 8 delicious traditional Japanese dishes and Bill prepared us different traditional very tasty drinks. After the cooking class we had a fantastic and unique dinner that we will remember as one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Back at home my wife made rice following the recipe we learned and it was fantastic. I prepared the teriyaki sauce 4 times in 10 days and we are loving it! We can’t wait to try to cook the tempura :) We definitively recommend Yasuyo cooking experience which is a delightful and loving way to immerse yourself into Japanese tradition.

What a magical experience this was! Having the very unique opportunity to visit a real Japanese home and spend wonderful time together with a Japanese family in a real residential neighborhood away from all the touristic action - was incredible! Yasuyo is a very warm and welcoming host. I felt like after the hours we spent cooking together that I made a new friend in Japan! The food we cooked together was the best food we had in Japan. And SO much food!! We could not finish all of it - Yasuyo is incredibly generous with the quantity and quality of food. We even had some of the fruits and veggies from her uncle’s garden. The house is cozy and beautiful. She had a beautifully put together recipes for us to take home. Also, she has impeccable English language skills as Yasuyo lived abroad for about a decade. The great English skills made it very easy to connect and interact! We had a super great time. Please don’t worry about the location being not smack in the center of a major city. There are plenty of trains to get to the place from both Nara and Osaka and then it was only a quick $12 taxi ride for us to get to the house. After the experience, the lovely Yasuyo and her husband actually drove us to the station in their car which was again so kind and generous of them. It was the Japanese Soul Kitchen with Japanese family with the kindest souls! Don’t miss this amazing opportunity if you are there. You will love it!

Yasu and Bill were splendid and made my big family's experience so wonderful. The location was unique and we got to learn of the area's history. The cooking experience was a memorable one for my family. We came in 11 (3 generations) and all of us felt well catered for. We were able to connect very well too and we certainly would love to come back here again when we visit Kansai / Nara.

Our familywere lucky to have such a memorable Cooking experience with Yasuyo & her hubby. Everything was perfect, the harmony of their home to the beautiful dishes we learned, the flow of laughter over a delicious meal. Yasuyo provided clear instructions, informative recipes. She cooked with skills & passion, a true chef quality. We left Yasu's home not only with full stomach but also feeling richer with knowledge in Japanese Cooking. This experience had made Nara our favorite destination. Thank you Yasu & Bill for the lovely time. Highly recommended this unique experience!!!

this is definitely what is called an experience. first things first: before getting to their house, you get to see the japanese countryside in its glory and walk through a stunning small town. this in itself could have been the airbnb experience and i would have been happy enough with it. by the time we reached yasu and bill's house, we received a warm welcome and got shown around the cooking area. it was quite obvious that a lot of effort and preparation were involved only for a few hours with us. i could write entire pages about this experience, but to keep it short and on point: 1) hosts - incredible people, fun, helpful, knowledgeable in what they are doing, great at explaining things and sharing stories 2) preparation - all the equipment you need, ingredients for cooking, plenty of drinks to go around (all of them home made). 3) cooking course - this felt so natural, there was no brain smashing learning involved or intense moments of focus. it was more of a hands on conversation regarding how to prepare a homemade japanese meal. we cooked 9 dishes with fresh ingredients whose role was in detail explained by yasu and bill and at no point did it feel like a pain or too much to do. 4) conversation - light and casual like meeting friends for a drink. 5) difficulty of the course - whether experienced or a beginner, at no point will you feel like you have nothing to learn. there is always something new in the conversation, a cooking skill to be shared or a fun story to listen to. overall: 10/10 would do it again.

Amazing experience! Yasuyo and her husband Bill are both great hosts and they managed to offer us the perfect last day of our trip to Japan. That being said, if you want a truly special experience off the beaten tourist path and are traveling to Nara, this course is definitely a must! Yasu made the cooking, the decoration of the food and the consequent arrangement on the table seem so easy and fun at the same time and overall the atmosphere was delightful! Will definitely do again on the next Japan visit!
