What you'll do

This class is designed for those who have never painted, as well as seasoned artists who want a creative system reboot. I will demonstrate a variety of techniques I have used over the years to create stunning abstract paintings with ease. In addition, I show you how to use local pigments and minerals that I hand-collected, and will give you some historical context about each, while hopefully inspiring you to look in your own communities for what you can add to your artwork. During the last 5-minutes of class we will critique each other's work and share what we learned to close out the session. Your paintings will be easy to transport back home as they are on heavy-duty paper and lay flat in suitcases or carry-on. You will find abstract painting a liberating and relaxing experience, one that is even more enjoyable with a bit of wine, salsa, and chocolate, and by the end of class will have the knowledge you need to easily continue abstract painting at home.

Andrea

An artist for 25 years, I have a Bachelor’s in Art History, Masters in Art Education, and have been teaching art to teenagers and adults for 12 years. I have exhibited my work in five solo and nine group shows, including "Feminists Under Forty," which was curated by Judy Chicago. My experience includes working with total novices as well as advanced artists looking to bring their work to the professional level. My paintings are featured in E. Ashley Rooney's "Contemporary Art of the Southwest" (2014), and I am currently represented by galleries in New Orleans and San Jose del Cabo. Having lived in New Mexico for 18 years, I am excited to share my favorite salsas, wine and chocolate with my guests.
