What you'll do

You will kayak the Hudson River Estuary including several places that most people have never been. You will become a team member of the NYC paddling community. Some prior kayaking experience is required, and beginners may find kayaking strenuous. Participants must be comfortable navigating in deep water. Your safety is our number one priority and we are fully compliant with the latest COVID-19 requirements. All you need to bring is a willing attitude and a smile. Prepare to get wet and don't panic if you capsize. You will see New York harbor, the Statue of Liberty, Caven Point Beach and the NYC skyline like you've never seen it before. A water-proof camera is recommended for photos. Your phone will get wet. We adjust the float plan depending on water currents and weather conditions. We provide the only water crafts that are allowed to transit under the Liberty - Ellis Bridge.

I am a certified kayak instructor with over 25 years of experience in swift-water rescue and have paddled the NYC circumnavigation, the Ambrose channel, and most of the Hudson River. I am a 9/11 first responder and career firefighter. Kayaking symbolizes balancing of your life and keeps you looking ahead. The challenges are mental and physical but the rewards are spiritual. Where you'll be

You’ll visit Liberty State Park including the Lower Hudson Estuary, Caven Point Beach, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. You will get as close as legally possible to Liberty Island. A very special habitat for many species of rare birds along the Atlantic Flyway called Cavan Point beach and salt marsh is another stop on our journey.
There are plenty of spectacular views that are not accessible by any other water craft.

John is a expert kayaker with a very welcoming personality. He made me feel safe with his knowledge of the hudson and its boating rules. He also had great insight and fun facts about the area around the statue of liberty and ellis island. He is a new yorker who really loves his city and its waterways; you can tell he is excited to share his knowledge with others. Thanks for everything, john! It was a great and unique way to experience new york.

We had a really good time with Joe, it was a nice experience, canoeing by the Liberty Statue was such an awesome experience! Joe was patient and helpful gave us advice on paddling and information about New York. He gave us time to enjoy the skyline and rest when necessary and provided us with a snack and water. We recommend him for his kindness and professionnalism.

Note: If you are an experienced kayaker I do not think you will have any problem with this activity. However, no matter what, do not accept a tandem kayak. My husband and I joined Joe to explore the Hudson. We used a tandem kayak which seemed like a good idea due to my lack of experience with kayaking. (I had kayaked once before about two months ago in NOLA in the swamp and had the greatest time.) From the minute we got into the kayak, we were sitting in three inches of water which we were told was to be expected. Switch “Might get wet” to “Will be sitting in water the entire time.” I was disappointed from the beginning as Joe was a great tour guide... to the family of three girls we were sharing the activity with. I heard none of it. Then, I began to grow very nervous. The only thing I did hear him say repeatedly was what to do in the event of capsizing. I remember telling my husband I was scared because he kept saying it over and over like it was clandestine. Sure enough, we capsized. Besides taking an involuntary swim in the Hudson, I damaged my phone and had to buy a new one. (To be fair, they did warn us about keeping electronics in a waterproof case. Not their fault. I just assumed that iPhone actually meant their IP167 rating...) I think I wouldn’t have been as upset but Joe’s partner confirmed once we were back on land that this type of kayak was known for capsizing under these water conditions. I mean... WHAT?! Why were we in it? I will say, his partner did try to make us laugh and forced us to take a fun picture which lightened the mood slightly. But let me tell you, this was an awful experience.
