What you'll do

If you've ever dreamed of sailing in a tropical paradise, we can help you get a great start to achieve that dream!
From the very start you'll be on our stable and comfortable 36' Sabre sailboat, Condor. No time spent sitting in a boring classroom! We'll jump right in with a little hands-on theory and terminology. Then we'll cover the important safety information and head out into Baltimore harbor. We will steer Condor out away from the dock, and then hand her over to you and your fellow students. Under our watchful and encouraging direction, you will be sailing! Just the wind and the sails and you!
You and the other students will rotate through each position on the boat. You will be steering and hoisting and trimming sails, putting the theory you just learned to practical use. We limit the class size to five students to ensure that everyone gets sufficient hands-on time to learn and practice and ask questions.
During this class, you'll learn basic sailing theory, terminology, and how to steer, hoist sails, trim sails, and tack.
You will also have the opportunity to see many of the famous (and not so famous) Baltimore waterfront landmarks.

I am the founder and director of SeaAffinity, Inc, a Baltimore based non-profit that combines my two passions of sailing and helping people learn. My wife, Suzanne, and I learned to sail over 20 years ago, on small boats. Since then, we have owned and sailed close to 50 different boats of all sizes in the Chesapeake and the Caribbean, and delivered sailboats on the east coast.
I am certified as a US Sailing Instructor, Instructor Trainer, and Master Instructor Trainer, and a member of US Sailing's National Faculty, the group that develops and writes US Sailing's training materials.

Where you'll be

We start our experience in the Canton area of Baltimore, adjacent to the Canton Waterfront Park and the Korean War Memorial, just across the harbor from historic Fort McHenry. You'll be sailing in the vicinity of the historic liberty ship, the John S. Brown as well as the modern ships. You'll see the industrial side of Baltimore's harbor as well Domino Sugar, Under Armor's headquarters, and even Baltimore's own Statue of Liberty!

That part of Baltimore is becoming more and magical these days. Steve navigated us like a pro, and super patient. We have budding new skippers the family now, and we will be back. Most of all we appreciated the social impact mission Steve has. How wonderful is that to do well by doing good.

My boyfriend and I took a sailing class with Steve and his wife and we had a blast! We had never even stepped on a sailboat before and they were extremely knowledgeable and patient with us newbies. They made sure each of us had several turns to steer the boat since there were two other guys that attended the lesson as well. They also shared personal stories about their sailing experience and even provided suggestions for future boat purchases. We would definitely recommend the class to anyone who has or hasn't been sailing before and is looking to increase their knowledge and experience with sailing... or if you're just wanting to try something new, like us!

We had a wonderful time learning to sail! Our whole group was very inexperienced, but Steve and Suzanne were great and knowledgeable instructors. They made the learning fun and educational, and answered our many questions about sailing and the boating lifestyle. Perfect birthday celebration and now we’re considering taking more lessons!

Wonderful experience. I am a complete novice at sailing, but they gave me all the basics with actual hands on experience during my introductory course. They were extremely personable and tailored the experience to meet my demands. Worth every penny and I can’t wait until my next course!
