What you'll do

We are excited to offer visitors an experience to get their hands in clay and work on a potters wheel at Mudhoneyz Studio. Upon arrival we'll do a tour of the studio. We will explain the process of making a pot from beginning to end, including glazing and firing. You will see our wood kiln, and we'll explain how we fire. You will also see a variety of unique ceramic artworks from local potters to give you inspiration for your time on the wheel. After the tour, we will roll up our sleeves and put on our aprons. You will be taught basic throwing skills through demonstrations on the potters wheel with step-by-step instructions. After a demonstration, guests will have the opportunity to try the potters wheel on their own and will be guided with techniques along the way. This hands on pottery experience will introduce beginners to the magic of throwing clay on a potters wheel in a small intimate setting. Your teacher will patiently guide you along the way. Note: From start to finish the process for making a pot takes several days given the need to throw, dry, trim, dry again, bisque fire, glaze, then glaze fire. It's because of the long process of making a complete pot that we are not able to offer participants the option of taking their pots home after just a couple hours in the studio. You will still have a great experience just trying out the wheel!

Your hosts

Mudhoneyz Studio is the working studio of Missy Batten, LeElaine Comer, Kim Dryden and Molly Walter - 4 potters in Western North Carolina making functional ceramic ware and sculptural wood fire. We have a working pottery studio where we share the workload of making, marketing, bookkeeping, wood prep and firing. It’s a place where people come to be together, to work, laugh and share in the experience of helping others see what is possible year after year. We all graduated from Haywood Community College's Professional Crafts Ceramics Program. We are experienced teachers and have taught classes throughout our careers at local pottery studios and now we are offering classes at Mudhoneyz Studio.
