What you'll do

We'll visit 1 or 2 outdoor jazz shows where local fans and musicians are hanging out these days - conscientiously. I've been jazz clubbing for 22 years, and haven't discovered anything that compares to the incredible spirit found in the Harlem jazz scene. I'll take you right to the heart of that scene and introduce you to everyone we meet. You'll immediately feel immersed in the Harlem jazz community and relaxed in your surroundings.

I'll also point out the historically significant sites and strikingly beautiful homes of Harlem. We will make sure to stop by the world famous Apollo Theater, and discuss the evolution of jazz from dixieland through bebop.

For your enjoyment, optional food and drinks will be available at outdoor-seating bar/restaurants along the way. (Refreshments are not included in the ticket price).

Note: This walking tour has been modified to be a covid-conscious Experience. Let's stay safe together. We all know that these are special times so the success of this Experience will depend on our mutually open communication and spirit of flexibility as NYC's circumstances change. Customer satisfaction is fundamental, so please voice all your concerns.

Note: If I am not available, my lovely Big Apple Jazz co-host, Amanda, will lead the group.

TripAdvisor ranks Big Apple Jazz Tours #1 for Nightlife in all of NYC.

Hi I'm Gordon, a third generation New Yorker.

I've always felt most at home in jazz joints. That's where my people are - the players and the fans; they've inspired me my whole working life:

- I've owned a jazz club in Harlem
- Managed musicians
- Had my jazz photos and articles in major publications
- Been awarded a Proclamation from New York State

For over two decades, I've been designing and leading immersive jazz crawls through NY's underground scene as the owner of Big Apple Jazz Tours.
We're a small operation but ranked # 1 in nightlife on TripAdvisor in New York City.

My co-hosts are the lovely:
Amanda, a Harlem jazz singer loved by all; and
Margot, a trusted colleague of Dizzy Gillespie.

We know our way around all the underground joints, so join me, Amanda, or Margot as we head deep into that scene.

Where you'll be

During these days our itinerary will depend on where the live music shows are happening in Harlem on your particular night. Lately, we can count on music being performed in scenic little neighborhood parks and even at an historic national monument. We'll go where the action is, and visit other historic sites and bar/restaurants that are along the way. Best days are Fri., Sat., and Sun.

Amanda gave us a wonderful tour of Harlem. Her passion for jazz and the history thereof is contagious. We had loads of fun. Would recommend it to anybody traveling to NYC.

Was an awesome experience to be present in the city where the foundation of many creative cultures arose from & to have someone like Gordon with a solid insight to lead the way was that extra bit special. Hoping to go back and do it again.

I love to get into the local life as much as possible when I travel and Gordon made this possible. His fantastic knowledge of the history and locals made this tour amazing. We would never have found these venues ourselves and even if we had would not have had the insight that Gordon provided.

Our group had a very special night visiting very local and private clubs in Harlem, Gordon was acquainted with everyone at the clubs and even some people we met when walking on the Harlem streets. This made me feel safe throughout the tour while enjoying the live Jazz performance. Gordon explained a lot about the history of the Harlem music. TRUST ME, you would never have found/experience these venues yourselves. This is only possible with Gordon's guidance. Gordon was a very caring person too, when our tour was ending, he made sure everyone in the group knew how to get back home, he even suggested me the best route since i was new to the city. Thank you again Gordon for creating such a special and unforgettable memory in my NYC tour!

This is the kind of thing I've been wanting to do in New York for so long! Gordon really provides a welcoming atmosphere and clearly loves jazz and the places he brings you to. Even if you just appreciate good music I feel like this experience is worth your time. There's something so mesmerizing about live music, especially jazz. Shake up your expectations and spend a night in Harlem.
