What you'll do

We will meet at Keith's house in Pittman Center, have a quick orientation to the area and birding, and then head out on foot to explore the community of Emerts Cove, a section of Pittman Center, one of the richest bird areas in this part of Sevier County. We might elect to drive a short distance to a local pond and horse pasture which are often very rich in bird life. But for the most part, we'll walk for about 2.5 hours, maybe a bit more, and explore the wooded areas, forest edges, tree and hedgerows and grassy and weedy fields for a variety of bird life. Spring and summer are always better because migrant birds have returned from their wintering grounds to breed in this area and bird song is much richer. But autumn and winter are still great times to explore the bird life in Emerts Cove. During our walk, we can talk about rich history of Emerts Cove and Pittman Center as well as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

FALL Songbird migration is a great time to look for migrants and winter birds from the NORTH are moving in! Spring and Summer bring early migrants and breeding birds. There is always an abundant richness of bird life in the area!
After we have explored the area for about 2.5 - 3 hours, we'll return to Keith's home and depart.

I would definitely recommend a visit with Ruth and Keith. They are wonderful people who are very knowledgeable about their area. It was great to hear about the history of their town and see the connection they have to it. My kids, 5 and 12, had a great time bird watching and exploring the area. Keith was very patient with my 5 year old and both of them want to visit again! His knowledge of birds and birding makes for a great experience for a novice or seasoned bird watcher. Next time I am in the area I will definitely do it again, we feel like we made some great friends.

This was a surprise excursion for my wife. She loves birds yet had never been birding. She felt welcomed and enjoyed every minute of it. Keith and Ruth went above and beyond to make our family feel welcome. If you enjoy nature you will not regret this!

Keith and Ruth welcomed us into their lovely home where we had the opportunity to sit on their porch and watch native birds while enjoying home-made scones, coffee, and tea. Then we walked to a Revolutionary Cemetary and heard the history of the area. Our last stop was at a local lake where we looked for more bird sightings. The area is lovely and Ruth and Keith are wonderful hosts.

I wish I could have spent more time with Ruth & Keith! Both of them are truly amazing people that are hard to come by. They are caring, funny, and the most intelligent birders I've ever met. Keith has an amazing knowledge of birds and was extremely helpful in my own birding experience. We also found out that they have an airbnb and we will DEFINITELY be staying there in the future. The quality of this experience was out of this world. No matter what level your interest in birds, you will enjoy your time with Ruth & Keith. That is a guarantee!

It was a wonderful experience. Keith and Ruth were great hosts and we had a wonderful experience seeing a large variety of birds. The coffee and warm scones was also a nice addition. Will likely do it again if the timing works out on our next visit to the Smokies.

As an amature birder, Keith made me feel knowledgable but had many helpful tips to become a better birder. Keith is a true professional birder. He was very knowledgable of not only the birds, but the local flora, fauna and history of the area. I learned so much in the few hours I spent birding with Keith. I highly recommend this experience whether you are an avid birder or just want to have a pleasent few hours trying something new and learning about the local wildlife.
