What you'll do

Nature in Japan is very rich in the world.
Japanese people have traditionally lived together with nature,
and believed that God inhabits nature, including rocks, trees, waterfalls, and mountains.
Mountains are protected from development and logging.
They are worshiped and shrines are built on them.
This is one of the reasons why natural areas in Japan remain so rich in flora and fauna.

In this experience, we will climb a local mountain, Mount Takao, to enjoy its rich nature protected by the mountain worship,
and visit several sacred spots such as large shrines built in the deep mountain.
This mountain is very popular as a lot of tourists and hikers visit, but we'll take a relatively quiet route which is easy to meet various plants and animals.

During our climb, I'll explain about the wild animals and plants, and how they relate to Japanese culture and history.
I'll also lend you binoculars to see some birds or animals closer,
and welcome you by providing Japanese unique snacks made with the local plant.

Now let's explore the Japanese Nature with me!

Hello! (^o^)/
I am a Nature Guide who offers several nature tours from Tokyo in Japan.

At university, I studied environmental science, forestry, and agriculture, and I'd worked at a nature tour company for 3 years.

I love nature.
To share nature knowledges such as wildlife and ecology is my pleasure, because I want everyone to feel its beauty and wonder.
I'll be glad if you can find the beauty and richness of Japanese nature during this experience.

Where you'll be

We will go to Mt Takao, about 1 hour from central Tokyo.

We'll start at the museum to learn about the local wildlife.
Then we'll climb on a trail to visit several sacred spots including waterfall, large temple, etc.
After having lunch on the top of about 600 meters high, we'll hike back down on a different trail.

We can choose either a restaurant or an outdoor field where we have lunch.

*Even if it rains, we can hike by taking cable car.

This was a wonderful hike and I highly recommend it because of Eiji's knowledge and love of nature and culture. He was also curious to ask and listen about all countries represented in our little group. We all got to know each other which is a treat when traveling. Eiji's personalized instructions helped me overcome subway concerns and his preparations for us were much appreciated. He helped me understand many things that I will see again on the rest of my trip.

Eiji was really nice and welcoming. He showed me a lot about japanese flora and fauna and knew a lot about them. We also talked a lot about japanese culture. It was a nice and relaxing experience in the nature. If I would have visited Mt. Takao on my own i wouldn't had seen even half of what I saw today.

Eiji is a kind and approachable person with expert knowledge about nature, plants, animals, and even scents. His love of nature is evident and infectious, and because I wanted to learn more about Shintoism and Buddhism, he also spoke about that at length. Overall, it was an impressive experience, beautiful nature and energy, connecting with the wonderful air and the trees, and then ascending to see the views of mountains under the afternoon sun, including Mt Fuji.. an unforgettable journey not to missed, which I will recommend with this amazing nature guide! Thank you Eiji.
