What you'll do

This delicious introduction to food and drinks from around Brazil is unlike any other. Over the course of 5-6 hours, we'll eat and drink our way across the most interesting parts of Rio that most visitors never get to see. We'll start in one of Rio's bustling street markets, where we'll taste exotic fruits and street food dishes. After that, we'll head to my favorite Portuguese restaurant in Lapa for a taste of old-school Brazil, where the waiters dress in white jackets, and serve the most delicious salt cod croquettes in town. From there, we'll wander toward Gloria, a beautiful neighborhood boasting some amazing street art and the famous Selaron steps. We’ll then take the subway to Flamengo, where we'll taste the uniquely delicious food from the Amazon, and finish up with a feast of dishes from Northeastern Brazil.
Other things to note
This is a walking tour so please dress comfortably. Although alcohol is offered, there are always non-alcoholic alternatives.

Tom is a freelance food and travel writer who has been living and writing in Rio since 2010 - he's worked as a presenter and culinary adviser on food shows for NBC and PBS, and writes regularly for Lonely Planet travel guides. Vinícius is a Paulista (native of São Paulo), and a lover of food, cachaça and samba! Vinicius is studying for a doctorate in sociology. Marie-Lou is a Brit who's been living in Rio since 2008 and has led small groups on adventures across South America. She knows Brazil like the back of her hand, but Rio is her true home. Brazilian food is our passion! We 'work' tirelessly to make sure we know all the best places to eat, drink and have fun in Rio.

Where you'll be

We’ll begin in the bohemian neighborhood of Lapa, which is full of ancient samba clubs and colorful street art. Then we’ll stop by Gloria, Flamengo and Laranjeiras, neighborhoods seldom visited by tourists, but full of bars and restaurants frequented by locals.

Where do I begin? This was the best experience! We were so excited for this tour and it was above and beyond anything we expected. Tom was the best host! We left feeling like we have a friend in Rio. Every detail was thoughtfully planned out. The food and drink pairings were exceptional and his expertise was incredible. Everywhere we went he gave us incredible insight into the culture and history of what we were experiencing. This is a tour I would do over and over again and recommend to everyone visiting Rio. Thank you Tom for and incredible time!

Such a fantastic and fun tour that gave us a deeper insight into life in Rio off the beaten tourist track as well as so many delicious foods and drinks - we particularly loved walking around the food market with our caipirinhas! Vin was a brilliant guide - relaxed, friendly and knowledgeable.

Absolutely worth it! Our tour guide was Mary-Lou and she was fantastic. Knowledgeable and so much fun. She could tell us so many interesting things about Brazil and you could feel how she loves the place. Communication before and after the tour was super fast and helpful. As to the tour itself: I don’t want to get into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil it; but you will definitely visit local spots as well as some classic touristy ones (just for the photos, not for the food, that will be special). You will try loads of fresh fruits and food from different parts of Brazil. And you will be full afterwards. Book it and enjoy!

I truly can recommend this food tour: from the first stop at the market place to the last with the delicious cooked meals it was a unique and amazing experience. Vinicius was the guide for our group and he is really passionate about the places we have visited and also the local products and dishes. He is a very welcoming host and arranged everything for us, not only the buying and ordering of the fruits and dishes we tasted, but also the subway tickets and at the end of the tour he made sure, that all of us get into the taxi/Uber. This not only a super tasty tour (for sure I will never eat a Mango in Germany again since I have tasted the real one here in Brazil - just so juicy and fruity as can be!) but also really well organized: thanks again, Vin, for this amazing day in Rio de Janeiro!
