Hey y’all! I’m Javier, a Native Austinite with deep roots in the state. My family has been in the Austin area for almost 200 years. We arrived here as enslaved African people when Texas was still a part of Mexico in the early 1830s.

My love for history and my community has led me to my current position. I am a PhD student at The University of Texas at Austin, Hook’em Horns! In my research, looking through the lens of sport, I explore how race, class, gender and migration impact educational access, attainment and outcomes in different communities across the globe.

Javier's tour was excellent. He has extensive knowledge of the African-American experience in Austin, and he combined his work as a scholar with his ancestry to create an experience that really made history come alive. I learned a lot about Juneteenth, freedom communities and the relationship between Texas and Mexico. I highly recommend this tour--Javier is a lively and experienced storyteller who ensures an engaging educational experience. There is so much work to be done to combat racism and inequality, and everyone would benefit from learning from individuals like Javier.

When traveling, we pick a few activities that center around learning about a communities history. This was a great tour for that. Javier presented information about history and philosophical decisions that were made regarding the community’s past. This was objective, but peppered with some cultural undertones that added flavor and perspective. Javier is very knowledgeable about the history of black and brown people and history as a whole, which helped add some amazing narrative. Highly recommend the tour and taking what you learn from him and doing the research yourself about your own community.
