What you'll do

Join me and explore the unique birds that call California home! Whether you are new to birding or it is one of your biggest passions, I can guide you to the habitats where we have a good chance of spotting these interesting and beautiful creatures. Our 4-5 hour morning excursion begins in riparian habitat for passerines and migrant bird species, then on to managed wetlands and open fields, where we will look for grassland birds, shorebirds and ducks. This will give us a broad picture of the ecologically unique birds of northern California.
Other things to note
This will not be a strenuous morning, but please come prepared to walk through some brush and on uneven dirt trails. I will have bird identification books. Don't forget your binoculars!

I've been a bird guide and biologist for over 30 years in many places: TX, NM, AZ, California, etc. I've helped citizen science programs, like Breeding Bird Surveys and Christmas Bird Counts, done wildlife population studies and nest monitoring. I served for 10 yrs on the board of a W. TX Audubon Society, including 2 yrs as President. I’ve traveled around the world for birdwatching (Tanzania, Uganda, Borneo, Belize, Costa Rica, China, Australia, Bonaire, to name a few, including most of the U.S. and offshore pelagics). I'm very passionate about conservation and ecology, which includes my profession, and love sharing my specialized knowledge with both children and adults. Other birding experiences I host are: Cosumnes River Preserve (http://bit.ly/2KFgVq2) and Gray Lodge Wildlife Management Area (http://bit.ly/2Na9w

Ellen's tour was wonderful! Although I was new to birding, Ellen told me kindly and clearly where birds come and how they look like, and I enjoyed the tour so much. It is difficult for beginers to find and identify birds by themselves. So this tour is a good start point and there's no need to worry if you have no experience of birding. Ellen also told me resources to learn birding. I highly recommend this tour if you like birds and walking in nature.

Ellen was warm and engaging from the start. She took time to understand my birding back ground and navigated our birding time around my foundation. Since I had some knowledge, she focused on what I can center on to learn, so much, that I am still writing down my notes! She told me about the different vertical level of birds, ground, bush canopy, etc. She could identify every bird sound! She has followed up with me, by sending me websites that will help me. I give her an 11 out of 10! I had a truly great day, thanks to Ellen, and some birds she directed me to.!

What a peach she is! Very warm, easy to be around. I'm not much of an early riser, but I got up at 4am to get up to Davis on time, and I'm glad I did. We went to a couple locations, and she was able to personalize the insights for me as a beginner. It was nice to see her connect with some of the other birders out and about - really feels like a cool hobby to have. I plan to go back soon, when the winter migration begins.

Wow! I thought we'd see some birds but Ellen really blew us away. We saw 51 different species of birds!!! Ellen, was extremely knowledgable and passionate and gave us a really in depth tour and description of the birds, their migration patterns, their calls, where they can be found, and how to spot the differences between males and females. It was an incredibly fun and educational experience and a really great day. Anyone looking to check out some local species and learn more about birds should DEFINITELY do this!!!

Finding myself in Davis with a couple hours to kill, I booked Ellen's birdwatching tour. I didn't know what to expect but walked away feeling so lucky to have stumbled upon Ellen and her tour. I enjoyed exploring some lovely parts of Davis and getting to learn so much about the different varieties of birds. I had a lot of questions and Ellen answered them all, as she is highly knowledgeable about not only local birds, but the area at large. Ellen provided snacks and excellent company and by the end of the tour I wanted to get coffee and ask her for life advice! Ellen is a really special person and I am so glad to have met her. I would definitely go back at a different time of year to see other kinds of birds with Ellen!
