What you'll do

On the whole day, all Island tour, available only on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sundays, major holidays excepted, we will take the State ferry to Sapelo Island from the mainland dock, rent a vehicle for $60 in cash plus gas used from an Island resident, and tour all of Sapelo with you driving if you prefer.

First, we'll see the University of Georgia's Marine Institute lab. We'll walk by R.J. Reynolds dairy barn, now a research laboratory, see his unique beautiful Turkey Fountain where I begin the story of Reynolds 4 wives, alligator pond, and more.

Then we'll drive to the impressive nearby R.J. Reynolds Mansion, which we will tour if a group isn't staying there for $5 each in cash including me.

Next, we'll drive to unspoiled Nanny Goat beach on the Atlantic Ocean and the scenic Sapelo lighthouse, built in 1820, then tour the Hog Hammock African-American National Historic Area.

Then we'll drive north through the Wildlife Management Area to the restored African American Racoon Bluff Church, the Chocolate Plantation tabby slave cabin and mansion ruins, and the mysterious Indian Shell Ring, hunt camp, historic store and guest houses, the tabby ruins of the mule powered sugar mill, Behavior Slave Cemetery, and R.J. Reynolds airfield and hangar.

Other things to note:
You will need to bring cash to pay for the following: $5 per person including me.

I have been fully vaccinated for Covid 19 with two shots of the Moderna vaccine. I'm a retired local writer for area newspapers who has made a 30 year study of the history of Darien, Georgia, Georgia's second city, and of Sapelo Island just 5 miles offshore from my house, where I have hunted, fished, biked, hiked, boated to, and swam on the beach for over 30 years.

I have had a lifetime interest in history which I minored in at the University of Georgia while getting a degree in journalism before a 25 year career in conservation with the state and federal government and two non-profit conservation organizations with state-wide memberships. I was named National Conservationist of the Year by the National Wildlife Federation for my work saving Georgia's free flowing streams and natural areas. Retired Flotilla Commander, U.S. Coast Guard.

I did a whole day tour and enjoyed every minute of it! You cannot get a better treasure of information and an insight into history! Jim is like this encyclopedia about Georgia having worked with state agencies over 40 years and lived around the coastal for 34 and the books on local history he has read and has in his house! I cannot even count them. I doubt anyone from our generation can even match it! You need to know any insider stories of Sapelo island - past or present - or any current happenings - or any hammocks - he has the answer! Also he will take you to the parts in the rental truck( note - extra payment) that no one else can. You can do a bike tour rentals are available but hey you can ride a bike around any island and beach. If you want to hear the stories and discover the history - you need to hear it from Jim! I doubt local 2-hr tours, though cheaper can give you those insights. Also you will be ferried in a bus with a big group. With Jim you also get the 1x1 personalized experience. He also assesses your level of interest and shares stories accordingly. So let him know. If you are a history buff like me - you will enjoy the tour tremendously like I did! His energy and passion for history and Eagerness to share even at this age amazes me.

Jim’s 80+ years on this Earth has gained him the wealth of experience and knowledge on many subjects; The history of Sapelo Island being one of those subject areas. On our 1/2 Day Tour, Jim facilitated our Trip on the island via ferry, the Visitors Center was closed on Good Friday (the day of our tour) but Jim gave us some good Book recommendations. Our Tour was by a rental Truck, we saw other tours via golf cart which looked slow and painfully cold, since it was mid 50 degrees and windy. We had our kids with us, and Jim was patient during the many breaks and pit stops we needed to have for our little one. Although there are other Tours hosted by Native Sapelo Islanders, Jim has read many books about the History of Sapelo and is able to quote some of them verbatim. If you would like a Tour by a Tour Guide who knows the History (Good and Bad) about the Island, then give Jim Morrison a call! :-)

Jim has lot's of great stories, from the far past and more recent. He kindly asked first if we wanted the more salacious details, and we took him up on it!

Jim really knew the island and added many stories and unknown fact and folklore as well about its famous inhabitants. All in all it was a good experience and added another dimension to our trip. Many of the sites we’d have never gotten to see otherwise.

The tour of the island with Jim was really interesting! He shared many stories and showed us areas that were way off the beaten path which we never would have found on our own. He knew everyone and he even introduced my daughter to several marine biologists who spent time discussing their research with her (she is studying in the field). We had a great experience - thanks Jim!

Wonderful tour by Jim! He was personable and knowledgeable, and we loved the risqué stories the best😁 Would definitely take this one again.
