What you'll do

Guests will meet me behind Baldwin Lake in a neighborhood where there is lots of trail parking. I will lead guests on a locals tour along the Pacific Crest Trail and hopefully, we will get to interact with Big Bear’s wild burros (from a safe distance) I see wild burros here in the morning 8 out of 10 times I hike here. I will take my guests on the best route to hopefully see Big Bear's wild burros. Guests who are joining me on this hike mid-April-May don't be surprised if we meet friendly PCT Thru-hikers on our journey on the PCT! These hikers hike 2,650 miles in a season as they follow the trail from Mexico to Canada. Pretty wild cactus flowers are in bloom in the springtime along this trail; If the cactus are in bloom, I’ll even harvest a cactus blossom snack for my guests. Or we might stop to try other edible plants of the San Bernardino National Forest. If you choose to hike the trail with me in February or March there may still be small patches of snow on the trail. There are many great photo opportunities along this section of the trail. If we are lucky we willget to even see wild donkeys hanging out trailside.
This hike is pretty easy, good for kids, not a lot of elevation gain.
I see donkeys 8 out of every 10 times I hike here but seeing the wild donkeys is not guaranteed.
Other things to note
Dogs are invited on this hike but I recommend they be leashes. There are rattlesnakes on this trail.
If guests are interested in a longer tour of the PCT I offer that also. Ask about pricing.

I've been exploring the wilderness of the San Bernardino Mountains for the last twenty years. I've hiked most of the Pacific Crest Trail through the Big Bear Valley and know all the prettiest spot. As your outdoor adventure guide through mountain trails I'm fluid on the plants and creatures that roam these mountains. I know all the prettiest spots in the mountains around the Big Bear area for hiking and outdoor fun adventures. Photography and photo editing are one of my passions as well, and if my guests want, I will help take posed and candid shots of them as we trek along this pretty trail.

Where you'll be

We will start our hike up the Pacific Crest Trail where the views are amazing. This is a great area to spot burros in the morning. They hang out all over this swatch of forest in between migrating down to Shay Meadows to snack. We will hike up the hill, along the Pacific Crest Trail then go back a different way. If we see any butterflies migrating I’ll teach your group a little about our local butterflies and how to photograph them easily

Such a beautiful hike in the morning with Amber. She is a very friendly person and pointed out many interesting facts about the flora and fauna around during our walk. We tasted juniper berries, smelled rabbit brushes and wild sage, thank you. Amber created a pleasant atmosphere that made it easy to connect with the other guests in the group. We wished the hike would have lasted longer because we liked it so much. We would like to participate in all the other experiences Amber offers.

Amber was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. She has great tips and facts. We brought our dogs and she was super conscious of their safety and well-being. We didn’t get to see any donkeys unfortunately but it was still a beautiful hike and well worth doing. It was customized to our interests and physical capabilities. We loved our morning with Amber!

This was a wonderful way to spend a morning! We saw a family of donkeys hanging out on the hillside:) The hike was not strenuous and would be good for someone who’s not a big hiker but still wants a nature walk with nice views. It was pretty cold in the morning for us but warmed up quickly, so layers are key! Amber was friendly and knowledgeable and I enjoyed listening to her talk about the area.
