What you'll do

Explore the largest sexual and gender diverse community in the world and cruise the Castro like a local on this fun and fascinating two-hour LGBTQ cultural walk. As a long-time resident and civil rights activist, I'll show you why diversity is celebrated as we meet real people with real stories in this beautiful village of rainbows. Offering the most comprehensive LGBTQ tour in the world, you'll visit twice as many historical sites than any other tour experience. Discover how the Gold Rush, World War II, civil rights leader Harvey Milk, the AIDS epidemic, and the Rainbow Honor Walk created such a strong and progressive LGBTQ community. Learn how LGBTQ equality and civil rights are still being fought for in the United States today.

Private groups of 10 or more can be accommodated on a request basis and are subject to availability.
Other things to note
Fortunately, San Francisco's weather is mostly mild year round so tours operate rain or shine. Please dress accordingly. Our route is easy, with no large hills and is handicapped accessible. There will be adult content.

Last year my company was proudly awarded the San Francisco Legacy Business status as the first and ONLY tour company celebrating "30" years of walking with Pride! Recognized as a longstanding, community-servicing business and a valuable cultural asset to the City and County of San Francisco. Wow! My predecessor Trevor Hailey began the tour in 1989 and became an icon until she retired in 2005. Being a travel professional and Castro resident, I had purchased Cruisin' the Castro Walking Tours, am the sole owner/operator and serve as an Emeritus Board Member for the Rainbow Honor Walk too. I've also had the pleasure of participating in the movies "Milk" and "When We Rise"! My focus is to bring education and awareness in regards to LGBTQ culture, equality and achieving civil rights.

It was nice to meet Kathy, who is a passionate activist and long-time resident of the Castro! It was clear that she knows many people in the neighborhood; several people said hi and made chitchat as we were walking by. As history buffs, my partner and I would have loved to learn more about details about the development of the neighborhood, Harvey Milk’s political journey, city/state/federal responses to the AIDS epidemic, etc. Kathy spoke mostly in broad sweeps about many events and the importance of tolerance and diversity. Perhaps just a stylistic preference!

Kathy was a wonderful and extremely knowledgeable guide! I love learning about lgbtq+ history through books and other media but it’s very impactful to stand in the places it happened and have a community member tell you about it.

An excellent tour! Kathy is extremely knowledgeable about the Castro District and it’s history. She made us feel very comfortable from the get go. She also made sure that everyone in our group was engaged! A definite must do when in San Fran!!

From someone not knowing much about LQBTQ+ community history, this tour definitely filled in so many gaps. Not only was it a tour about SF LGBTQ+ history, it was a tour that encompassed many walks and ways of life. Very opening experience. The people that I went in the tour with were from all over the world(Singapore, Australia). And MUCH kudos to Kathy for knowing her stuff! She was energetic, positive, and inspiring. I learned a lot through this and I’d recommend it for anyone visiting and wanting to know more about San Fran’s gay culture. You won’t be disappointed.
