What you'll do

You'll get an in-depth and personable tour of our farm with our knowledgeable guide Tory, who has been our team at the farm for about a year now.

Our farm is the oldest certified organic coffee farm on the island. We’ll offer you a tasting of each of our 2 roasts while informing you about the history and cultivation process of Kona coffee, interesting plant science and agriculture facts that touch on the fascinating world of coffee in Hawaii, as well go over the flavor notes that different stages in roasting that can create.

Once finished, we’ll take a walk around our property where you’ll see the coffee trees and learn how coffee is handled and taken through an elaborate set of processes that turns it from a raw and slightly sweet fruit into drinkable coffee.

At the end of the tour, you'll get to roast a batch of coffee with our owner and master roaster Tara and see how it turns from a simple green bean to the complex flavor packed coffee you enjoy.

You’ll be working with our vintage and beloved roaster made in the early 1970’s, which is a rare experience.

Other things to note!
Please remember we are a real, operating farm. Ours is a nearly 100 year old house. While we may not be the shiniest farm, we love what we do and that shows brightly through every member of our team!

My husband Ed and I came to Hawaii for a vacation and to our surprise, never left.! What was originally planned as a 3-month excursion, has turned into an entire passion of taking on the oldest certified organic coffee farm on the Big Island of Hawaii.

A real operating farm, we also do farm tours all day almost daily, so we have experience showing regular coffee drinkers the fascinating process from start to finish; from seed to cup.

Ed brought a plethora of knowledge and skills to the farm as an environmental engineer and a chemist. He is our in-house agronomist :]

I am an artist which certainly informs the nuances roasting coffee. I learned from the former farmer, ‘the Yoda of coffee’ who was likely the first Kona farmer who got into roasting.

Both of us, with our team, do every step hand-harvesting to roasted cup!

Where you'll be

You'll ride up into the slopes of Mauna Loa, along a real farm road where a large handful of small family farms are located and learn how Kona coffee is harvested.

We’ll start in the upstairs tasting area, with an incredible view of Kealakekua Bay and the Pacific ocean.

After a walk around our 6.1-acre property, you'll be led to the roasting room where you’ll be taught how to roast your own coffee.

Tara and her team were super helpful. My navigation gave me conflicting directikns at a certain point. Tara and I started to exchange text messages and videos to pin point where I was so that I could be safely ushered in. The coffee is amazing! And the hospitality from all farmers and reps of Rooster Farms Coffee were super knowledgeable, kind, and fun. This is the tour for allnto take if you love nature and coffee!

I booked this tour as a surprise for my husband on our honeymoon, as he loves all things coffee-related. I paid $125 each for a two hour experience - to tour the farm, have a coffee tasting, learn much more about the roasting process, and have a roasting lesson. What we got was less than a 30 minute high level overview of the farm, Kona coffee and the harvesting/roasting process. We walked no more than 20 yards from the residence for the “tour”. Tory, the host, was knowledgeable, but talked so fast and was in such a rush. The end of the tour was a hard sales pitch to buy their products. Had this been a free visit, we would have chalked this up to an interesting experience. But this was not worth even close to $125 per person. We ended the tour with my husband saying, “please tell me you did not pay a lot of money for this.” I wish I had not.

Tara, Mary-Grace, and staff not only were extremely knowledgeable about their trade, but could describe and demonstrate in great detail the process of making organic coffee, all while making the guest feel welcome. Their expertise and accommodation demonstrated an artisan's knowledge of making coffee from seed to cup.
