What you'll do

I'll be your guide on our interactive walk exploring the authentic diversity of township life. At first glance, life may seem a daily struggle but delve deeper and we’ll find a place of friendship and resilience. Our itinerary begins at MADaboutART, a social enterprise using art and creative expression to support children to make positive life choices. You'll see our gallery of amazing narrative artwork telling stories of the lives of children in the township. In the streets around MADaboutART you’ll experience the culture and ways of the township. You'll learn about Xhosa traditions and the role of the Sangoma (traditional healer). Youth teams often practice soccer and netball on the sports ground. They might ask you to join in! You'll see many sights along the way; the contrast between traditional wooden homes and new Government-built brick homes, cattle and pigs grazing among the dwellings, taverns, women doing daily laundry, every day is a different experience. Finally, we'll return to MADaboutART where in afternoons and school holidays you’ll meet the children as they sing, paint, bead, whatever the activity of the day is (curriculum dependent). On Sunday mornings we have the option to join a local church congregation for part of their service. We hope you'll take a little township magic home with you (and leave a little piece of your heart with us)

Hello, I’m Beaty! I was born and grew up in Dam-se-Bos, Knysna. I’ll share my unique, no-frills perspective on life and social challenges in the new South Africa. Sometimes shocking but always honest, my personal story is part of the fabric of this experience. I joined MADaboutART while I was still at school. Now I have two children myself. I run an after-school curriculum for children in the township and a social enterprise based on interactive, socially-aware tourism which trains unemployed youth and raises income to create a brighter future for children in the township

About the organization: MADaboutART

MADaboutART fights HIV using art and education. Its award-winning curriculum for children and youth uses art to ignite imagination, have fun and achieve social change. Many young people in poverty experience anger and low self-esteem; a spiral of vulnerability that destroys hope. MADaboutART offers a safe, fun learning environment where children heal past trauma and build hope for the future

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to MADaboutART.

Where you'll be

We’ll be exploring Dam-se-Bos township. The first residents were moved here by force in the 80s under apartheid. People chopped trees to build shelters. There was no electricity so they burned wood for warmth. Many were hungry. Today the area is much improved. Even so some families still have no electricity, running water, proper toilets and no money for food. We aim to grow the local economy and create a brighter future for people who live here

I love meeting this little town their children and people. It was very emotional for me seeing those paintings on the walls full of personal stories. I hope Beaty will never give up on helping the girls and her community. This visit was one of the best things I have done in this trip to SA.

We really enjoyed visiting MADaboutART and learning more about the community. Beaty and her daughter are excellent hosts, sharing the history of the program and community.

You need to go on this!!! The education and support that Beatrice and her team provide for these children, needs to be recognized and learned about. The people of the community were welcoming and made sure we enjoyed our time. This experience is educational and fun!

We spent 3 weeks in South Africa in late June 2021 to dive with sharks, see Mountain Zebra and Addo Elephant parks and finish with a plains game hunt in the East Cape. On our way to Mossel Bay we spent a night in Plettenburg Bay and decided to see the "not so sanitized" version of South Africa and, we are so glad we did. First off Beatrice is an amazing person who has survived adversity that most of us spoiled Americans can barely imagine and is working hard to help the children of her township make a better life for themselves. If the world had more Beatrices and less Donalds, it would be a far better place. This tour evoked an entire range of emotions. The living conditions are not good. Many of the houses share one toilet and many have no running water. Despite all of that, the people we met were cheerful, intelligent and despite their living conditions had a wonderful attitude and love for life. If you travel anywhere near here, take a couple of hours out of your trip and engage in this wonderful experience.

Eu amei demais a experiência.

This is a unique experience. Beatrice is a great person and showed us how the life is on the township and also answered any questions we had. The MADaboutART project is brilliant and it was awesome to see the diffent ways of art from the kids and teenagers there. I felt super safe during the entire tour and I highly recommend this experience to everyone.
