What you'll do

I'll be your guide on our interactive walk exploring the authentic diversity of township life. At first glance, life may seem a daily struggle but delve deeper and we’ll find a place of friendship and resilience. Our itinerary begins at MADaboutART, a social enterprise using art and creative expression to support children to make positive life choices. You'll see our gallery of amazing narrative artwork telling stories of the lives of children in the township. In the streets around MADaboutART you’ll experience the culture and ways of the township. You'll learn about Xhosa traditions and the role of the Sangoma (traditional healer). Youth teams often practice soccer and netball on the sports ground. They might ask you to join in! You'll see many sights along the way; the contrast between traditional wooden homes and new Government-built brick homes, cattle and pigs grazing among the dwellings, taverns, women doing daily laundry, every day is a different experience. Finally, we'll return to MADaboutART where in afternoons and school holidays you’ll meet the children as they sing, paint, bead, whatever the activity of the day is (curriculum dependent). On Sunday mornings we have the option to join a local church congregation for part of their service. We hope you'll take a little township magic home with you (and leave a little piece of your heart with us)

Hello, I’m Beaty! I was born and grew up in Dam-se-Bos, Knysna. I’ll share my unique, no-frills perspective on life and social challenges in the new South Africa. Sometimes shocking but always honest, my personal story is part of the fabric of this experience. I joined MADaboutART while I was still at school. Now I have two children myself. I run an after-school curriculum for children in the township and a social enterprise based on interactive, socially-aware tourism which trains unemployed youth and raises income to create a brighter future for children in the township

About the organization: MADaboutART

MADaboutART fights HIV using art and education. Its award-winning curriculum for children and youth uses art to ignite imagination, have fun and achieve social change. Many young people in poverty experience anger and low self-esteem; a spiral of vulnerability that destroys hope. MADaboutART offers a safe, fun learning environment where children heal past trauma and build hope for the future

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to MADaboutART.

Where you'll be

We’ll be exploring Dam-se-Bos township. The first residents were moved here by force in the 80s under apartheid. People chopped trees to build shelters. There was no electricity so they burned wood for warmth. Many were hungry. Today the area is much improved. Even so some families still have no electricity, running water, proper toilets and no money for food. We aim to grow the local economy and create a brighter future for people who live here

I highly recommend this experience to anyone. Some people warned us that it is not safe to enter township ,but we felt SUPER SAFE and actually felt safer than in the cape town city center or stations etc. Although people in town ship don’t have much, everyone was really nice and said hello to us like anyone else. It was nice to know how people live here and what the problems are. It was a really deep tour. The dogs/puppies and kids in the town were sooooo adorable.

This experience was helpful in understanding the lives of South Africans, some of the challenges in the country, and a bit of the political struggles. We loved Beatty and felt like she was a great guide - she is an amazing, inspirational woman. We also were able to meet and dance with some of the children and learn about what the MadAboutArt organization is doing both for people living with HIV/AIDS and the young girls in the community. We were so glad we were able to experience this to understand more about township life.

I’m so glad I took this tour with Beaty. This a part of South Africa that I never would have seen without taking this tour. After meeting in the township, I got a great description of life in the township and some information about Mad About Art even before the tour began. The tour itself was amazing. We saw a variety of housing, a small store and lots of other things, all accompanied by great explanations of life there. The directions were clear and thorough and I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable during the tour.

AMAZING!!! Do yourself a favor and don't pass up this opportunity! Our time with Beaty and team was profoundly meaningful. She is a truly brave person, she is fighting for a better future and she will never give up. Her personal story is inspirational. Despite tremendous challenges, she chooses to be strong, to share goodness, to tell a story of hope, and she makes that choice anew every day. We got to see life in her township as it is, and it's not all pretty. Why kids fail in school, why families are stuck in poverty, girls who run away from forced marriages, why so many Africans are "size 10". But also how it is possible to choose to be strong, hopeful and healthy. The garden route is beautiful, but if you take this tour with Beaty you will find another side of its beauty.

This tour through a township was very special. The host was super friendly and open to questions. She told us more of the people living in the community and showed us her own house, a little shop where many kids come to buy candy and other type of houses that are built there. What I found the most special is that the host is doing so much great things for the community and keeps many kids from the street and drugs. She also gives kids (whose parents are not there anymore, drugs addicted or left them behind) the feeling that they are loved and not alone and that they can mean something, even when times get very difficult for them. This tour is definitely worth it and I recommend this to everyone! Thank you Beatrice for letting me have a glimpse into the real world in South Africa. Wishing you and the community all the best :)
