What you'll do

You will be able to enjoy the variety of planting, species and cultivars in this truly global garden.
I am able to share with you my experiences and developments of this garden and it's diversity as a long term passionate gardener. You will also have time to explore on your own.
I love the Pyrenees and it's flora and I collect and research the endemic plants from there.
We are however also in the South of France which offers a Mediterranean climate, so
who would have thought you could overwinter oriental lemongrass?( used in thai curries) and that one of the great features of the garden is a bamboo wood?
We will be enjoying and exploring some of my favorite plants by season and by success.
The reasons why they develop so well and others less so.
By walking through the different areas developed in the garden I will explain how I have adapted the soil or situation to the planting to allow it to adapt to a typical year here, such as heavy rainfall, extreme heat, drought and exposure to the extreme elements between winter and summer.

A map shows the areas developed, such as mature park, alpine and greenhouse area, herbaceous, tropical and Mediterranean borders. Woodland and Bamboo.
Other things to note
The experience is possible in most weathers, based on my backup of covered areas in the garden as well as photos, maps and plant documentation, however everything is more enjoyable in the sunshine!

As and RHS L2 qualified gardener and having previously run a successful gardening business in the UK I am so excited to share knowledge, experience and ideas of my 3 years of gardening in the South West of France in a 1.2 Hectare garden.
Climates, local knowledge and variety of plants are so different that the change in gardening would be interesting and useful to any gardening enthusiast.
I worked as design engineer for 13 years before retraining as a gardener some years ago.
Qualified to teach English as a foreign language(TEFL). I speak Danish(Scandinavia) German, French and English.

Where you'll be

We will primarily be in the gardens 1.2 H which is based in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
The garden comprises cultivated borders and garden rooms , greenhouse and kitchen gardens, then the more naturalised woodland areas and planting as well as the large feature of a bamboo wood. It is these elements of combining endemic(native) with global planting that makes the garden special.
There are also opportunity to hike for more mountain views.

Mette radiates her passion for creating beauty with this garden spot she has established in southern France. Here at the family's restored farmhouse, we saw in the original "before" photos the brambles and overgrown forest that she, her husband and children have essentially excavated from a hillside. I can just see her staying ahead of a bulldozer to save oak saplings and worthy specimens of sycamore trees. Already, there are so many types of trees, shrubs, herbs and such to see at Mette's garden, you sense she has been very busy. Walking and talking plants, planning, and stone work features, you meander through beautiful well situated camping spots, playscapes, and tranquil resting spots. There's even a cart road or cow path from old Roman times. At the bottom, you'll find a rill. And so kindly, Mette is completely happy for you to collect seeds all along the way. And after just enough bites of botany, she provides a delicious, filling, French lunch with local pate, sausages, and home grown tomatoes and more with much lively conversation. When she shows you her very comfortable B&B, "the best room in the house," you think you would have booked on the spot if there had not been a guest coming. Who doesn't need the rest that a beautiful garden in the cool of a French September can offer? We stopped here on our way to Latousse from Lourdes to see what an English gardener and design engineer had done with a 3 or 4 acre project, and left having been fed body and soul by a new friend with a fount of knowledge, the gift of hospitality and a passion for life. We even learned what a rill is....and forgot our collected seeds.
