What you'll do
We will look at a basic design from a beginners level in silver jewellery making. This can be a ring, pendant, bangle, earrings, brooch. All ideas considered, as long as it's achievable within time frame and skill set. Talk over the idea of what you would like to make . Explore techniques, making templates in forms of copper and paper. After a practice run with copper. We can then begin to pick up the silver and start to look at the processes of how silver needs to be treated and worked, so everything is correct for the form. With my guidance we work through the stages of the structuring and making of the chosen piece. This may include soldering, forming , setting. All of this will be fully explained and worked through in a clear and easy manner. There will be a break with light refreshments. Afterwards the piece will need to be finished. We will go through polishing techniques, texture techniques and patinas. At the end, a recap and explanation of how we got to the finished piece, how we achieved it and how we could take it further with more advanced techniques at another session if required.
I am a silver smith-jeweller with over 19 years experience working in all forms of the art of this craft. In the summer you will find me at many of the large music festivals (Glastonbury....) where I take a workshop showing works in progress and my finished pieces. I am very passionate about metal and the way it moves and forms whilst being worked with different tools. I am an easy going person with an open minded approach to learning , hoping to give people a positive learning experience. I always find a good sense of humour and being able to laugh at mistakes helps .Simon.
